(2004-03-04) The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) and the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) have entered into an exciting new Tripartite Agreement. The agreement aims to recognise the disparity between the health of indigenous peoples and the health of the general population.
Moreover the agreement acknowledges the need to respond to health development priorities within each jurisdiction by fostering cooperation between governments, institutions, researchers and indigenous peoples which will result in a better understanding of factors that both determine, and ultimately improve, the health of indigenous populations in all three countries. View a copy of the Agreement.
The outcomes of this agreement will include information sharing in research methodology, ethical conduct of research, community engagement, transfer of research outcomes and research capacity as well as encouraging direct links between researchers and organisations for the development of international collaborative research programs.
One initiative of the Tripartite Agreement is the International Collaborative Indigenous Health Research Partnership (ICIHRP) grant that will focus on resiliency. The CIHR, NHMRC and HRC will call for Expressions of Interest for the ICIHRP in June 2004.
The ICIHRP is intended to improve health for indigenous peoples through cross-country, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral research focused on the factors and processes that promote resilience.
Applicants will be asked to address health issues that are of a high priority to indigenous peoples through collaborations with the other countries involved with the Tripartite Agreement. Applicants will be asked to take into consideration what forms a basis for good health throughout the life span of indigenous peoples with indigenous community, academic and appropriate research expertise engaged in the research. Capability and capacity development will be a focus of this research opportunity with PhD students and community researchers engaged in cross-country placements.
Further information in relation to the ICIHRP will be prolongated via the CIHR, NHMRC and HRC standard communication networks in June 2004.
