The first STIHR competition resulted in 51 transdisciplinary training programs being funded in March 2002. An additional 35 programs were funded in April 2003. A number of CIHR Institutes and their partners have since launched smaller competitions in specific areas. In 2008, a new competition was launched and resulted in 54 transdisciplinary training programs being funded in April 2009. These programs included 36 renewals of existing training grants from the 2002 and 2003 competitions and 18 new training programs. CIHR and its partners have invested and/or committed more than $254 million in STIHR thus far.
