Overview of Regular Funding Programs

The IG has developed a suite of Regular Funding Programs (continuous launch cycle) that are a constant feature in our research funding landscape. These programs are designed to facilitate training and/or research within the IG's Research Community:

Grants

  • Bridging Operating Grants (One-Year)
    Launched in June and December, every year
    Objective: To provide one-year operating funds, affording Principal Investigators the opportunity to resubmit their research proposal without loss of momentum, staff or trainees.
    Value and Term: Up to $100,000 (with no equipment funding) for a maximum of one year.

  • Catalyst Grants: Invention - Tools, Techniques and Devices Grants
    Launched in December, every year
    Objective: To enable the development of tools, techniques and devices facilitating biomedical research and the diagnosis or treatment of patients.
    Value and Term: Up to $100,000 per annum (including equipment) for a maximum of three years.

  • Catalyst Grants: High-Risk, High Benefit Grants
    Launched in December, every year
    Objective: To encourage researchers to undertake high risk research.
    Value and Term: Up to $100,000 per annum (including equipment) for a maximum of two years.

  • Meeting Planning and Dissemination Grants
    Launched in December, every year
    Multiple competition deadlines
    Objective: To provide partial support for workshops and scientific symposia held in Canada, which fall under the IG's mandate.
    Value and Term: One time funding of up to $15,000 (the IG will normally contribute $2,500 to $10,000 towards the funding of a workshop or symposium).

Awards

  • Clinical Investigatorship Award
    Launched in December, every year
    Objective: To provide two years (renewable once) of protected research time for clinical genetics investigators to pursue clinical or translational research.
    Value and Term: $120,000 for a maximum of two years.

  • Lap-Chee Tsui Publication Award
    Launched in June, every year
    Objective: To recognize outstanding published health research carried out by trainees.
    Value and Term: $1,000 for a maximum of one year.

  • Maud Menten New Principal Investigator Prize
    Launched in June, every year
    Objective: To recognize and support the research excellence of New Principal Investigators.
    Value and Term: $30,000 for a maximum of one year.

  • Scriver Family MD/PhD Studentship Awards
    Launched in December, based on availability of awards
    (Total of ten awards at any given time)
    Objective: To support students enrolled in MD/PhD training programs.
    Value and Term: $22,000 (including a $1,000 Research Allowance) for a maximum of six years.

All programs are subject to an annual review by the Institute Advisory Board and may change over time.
