Description

The CIHR-Institute of Aging Age+ Prize recognizes excellence in research on aging carried out by emerging Canadian scholars. Approximately 10 to 15 awards are offered annually to meritorious authors of published, scientific articles on aging. The Age+ Prize is aimed at graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents from all disciplines, working in the field of aging. Articles may cover any of the Institute's priority research topics. Profiles of the award recipients are posted at the end of this page.

Funds Available

CIHR's contribution to the amount available for these awards is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations, and the conditions that may be attached to them.

• Approximately 5 awards of $1,000 per competition (10 to 15 awards annually)
• Award winners are encouraged to use the funds towards presentation of their research at a scientific meeting.
• Results announced and funds made available between 4 and 6 months following receipt of application.

Objectives

• To recognize excellence of Canadian research carried out by graduate students (Masters and PhD), post-doctoral fellows, and residents/fellow in all fields and disciplines within the priority research topics page of the CIHR-Institute of Aging.
• To recognize the participation of trainees in advancing the research priorities of the Institute of Aging.
• To recognize research contributions for which a trainee has had primary responsibility.
• To promote careers and communication in research on aging in Canada.

Eligibility

Graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, residents can submit their paper or supervisors or co-investigators involved in the research can submit the paper of their trainee. All co-authors must be copied on the email submission of the application. In cases of equal co-author(s) meeting the eligibility criteria, copying all co-authors is especially important as it serves to confirm that only interested eligible equal co-authors are applying for the award, which will be shared equally among them.

The following eligibility criteria apply:

• The research article must have been published within six months of the application submission deadline;
• The applicant (or nominee) must be a trainee (Masters, PhD, Post Doctoral Fellow, resident/fellow) in any Canadian university, hospital or research institute.
• The applicant must be the first author of the article. In the unusual case of equal first co-authors meeting these eligibility criteria, the prize will be divided equally among the co-authors.
• Canadians and non-Canadians doing research in Canada are eligible.
• Canadians doing research abroad are not eligible, except for research carried out during a postdoctoral fellowship.
• Articles must be outputs from research projects in which the trainee has been involved significantly during his/her period of post-graduate or post-doctoral training. The trainee's role must be made clear in Section B of the application.
• Review articles or manuscripts submitted for review or in press are not acceptable.
• Only one submission is permitted for any given article.
• Previous Age+ winners are not eligible.
• Applicants are not required to hold any funding from CIHR.

Review Process and Evaluation

• Applications deemed eligible are subject to a relevance review. Only relevant submissions proceed to peer review. The following relevance review criteria apply:
  1. Extent to which the proposal addresses one or more of the five Research on Aging Priority Topics.
  2. Extent to which the research and research design address issues of aging and/or the aged as essential elements of the research objectives, hypotheses and analyses (e.g. dynamics of aging, age-relevant models and/or aged subjects; uniqueness of aging or aged population).
• Applications deemed relevant are pooled for comparative review, which is conducted by a peer review committee according to the following criteria:
  1. Significance of the candidate's contribution to the article (e.g., design, conduct, analyses) in the context of the candidate's experience;
  2. Quality and comprehensiveness of the research project (including stature of journal within the context of the area of inquiry or substantive focus of the research);
  3. Impact of the research on the advancement of knowledge in aging, gerontology or geriatrics;
  4. Accessibility and understandability of the lay summary to a general audience.

How to Apply

   • Complete Section 1. Note: If you do not have a CIHR Personal Identification Number (PIN), please visit the PIN Form - New User Registration.
   • Indicate 'Institute of Aging Age+ Prize in Section 2 a).
   • Complete Section 4.

   • Please note that section A and B must be fully completed for each equal co-author meeting the eligibility criteria.
3. Submit your application:
• E-submission is mandatory - e-mail both completed application forms and an electronic version of the published article to blmccoy@interchange.ubc.ca. Receipt of emails will be acknowledged.
• All co-authors/supervisors must be copied when sending the e-submission.
• In addition to the e-submission, mail one copy of your full application (including a signed copy of the Institute Community Support Form) to the following address:
