INMD Scientific Director: Dr. Philip Sherman

Welcome to the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes (INMD). The vision of INMD is to position Canada as a leader in the creation of knowledge and its translation through supporting health research in relation to the INMD mandate that benefits all Canadians and the global community.

In the spring of 2010, a new INMD Strategic Plan was approved by the CIHR President Dr. Alain Beaudet and then launched. This new Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes Strategic Plan 2010-2014 presents a vision for INMD and will guide the Institute over the next five years. INMD will play a key role in contributing to overall success of CIHR and delivering on the vision presented in CIHR's Five Year Strategic Plan entitled Health Research Roadmap: Creating innovative research for better health and health care.

The number of Strategic Priorities that INMD will pursue over the next five years has increased, based on advice received from relevant research communities, stakeholders, and members of the INMD Institute Advisory Board. The new Strategic Priorities are:

  • Food and Health
  • Environments, Genes, and Chronic Disease
  • Continuum of Care
  • Obesity and Health Body Weight: Seeking Solutions

Please take the opportunity to read the new INMD Strategic Plan, and contact me or members of the INMD leadership team should you wish to discuss new research opportunities arising.

To increase communication to the community of relevant scientists, voluntary health organizations, and individuals INMD launched a monthly Newsletter in January, 2009. I encourage you to subscribe to the INMD Newsletter at: INMDComms@cihr-irsc.gc.ca.

I am pleased to serve the diverse research communities that fall within the INMD mandate, and am inspired by the excellence demonstrated by Canadian investigators connected to INMD.

I continue to look forward to opportunities to meet with researchers, partners, and stakeholders to fulfill the Institute's new strategic research priorities.

As the Scientific Director of INMD, I look forward to helping you enrich the life of Canadians by way of your research endeavours.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Philip M. Sherman
