Canada’s Premier Young Researcher: Peter Lougheed/CIHR New Investigator Award

The Canada’s Premier Young Researcher: Peter Lougheed/CIHR New Investigator Award is CIHR's most important career development award. Given to Canada's brightest young researchers at the beginning of their careers, this five-year award represents an important incentive for young researchers to pursue their work in Canada.

This award is co-funded by the Peter Lougheed Medical Research Foundation.

The Honourable Peter Lougheed

Mr. Lougheed, one of Canada's prominent champions of health research, served as Premier of Alberta from 1971 to 1985. In 1980, he created the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. Mr. Lougheed currently serves on the board of many corporations, and is a senior partner in the law firm of Bennett Jones. Mr. Lougheed was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2001, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to health research.

Who is eligible?

The award is given annually to the top applicant for the CIHR New Investigator funding program.
