IHDCYH Travel Awards for Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows

2010-11 Program

The Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) promotes and supports research that improves the health and development of mothers, infants, children, youth, and families in Canada and throughout the world.

Program

IHDCYH is launching a competition for research trainees (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to present their own research at annual, or other regular interval, meetings including international conferences, related to the Institute's mandate. The maximum amount for a single award is $1,000 to partially cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and registration. Up to 10 awards will be available for each of 4 competitions per year. The application deadlines are January 15th, April 15th, June 15th, and October 1st.

Eligibility

All annual conferences (including international meetings) related to the Institute's mandate are eligible under this program.

The trainees' research supervisor must be affiliated with IHDCYH (The research supervisor indicates IHDCYH as the "suggested CIHR Institute" on his application when applying to CIHR open grant competition).

For each competition, the number of trainees applying from the same research team (same supervisor) is limited to 2.

Evaluation

Applications for IHDCYH travel award will be assessed by Institute senior staff, based on strength of the application relative to some or all of the following criteria:

  • Potential relevance of the trainee's research project to the mandate of IHDCYH;
  • Impact of the presentation on the career of the trainee;
  • Potential relevance of the conference to the mandate of IHDCYH;
  • Non-overlap with other applications submitted to the same competition (i.e. to promote a variety of topics, research themes* , and meetings).

The student or fellow must be the first author and presenter of the oral communication or poster.

In each training category (postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and master students), priority will be given, in the order shown, to:

  • First-time applicants;
  • Applicants nearing completion of their training program;
  • Applicants presenting their results for the first time.

* The four themes of research include "biomedical research; clinical research; research respecting health systems and health services; the health of populations, social and cultural dimensions of health and environmental influences on health."

Allowable Costs

The maximum amount for any individual award will be $1,000. Expenses eligible for support include:

  • Travel costs
  • Accommodation expenses
  • Per diem for meals
  • Conference registration fees

How to apply

To be eligible for funding, an application should include the following documents:

  1. The Institute Community Support (ICS) form [ PDF (244 KB) | Help ]. Before completing the form, be sure to follow the instructions specific to this Travel Award Program;
  2. A confirmation of your status as a full-time Master or PhD student or as a post-doctoral fellow at a recognized Canadian academic institution (confirmation could be included in the letter from your research supervisor);
  3. A copy of your abbreviated curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum);
  4. A letter of support from your research supervisor;
  5. A copy of the abstract submitted to the selected meeting and the letter confirming its selection for presentation (can be sent at a later date).
