Science with Impact Workshops
An important aspect of the Synapse program involves teaching health researchers how to become effective mentors for young people. CIHR is working with a group called Let's Talk Science. The organization has considerable expertise supporting researchers in communicating science with youth in effective and fun ways.Let's Talk Science is a national charitable organization that strives to improve Science literacy through leadership, innovative educational programs, research and advocacy. LTS motivates and empowers youth to use science, technology and engineering to develop critical skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to thrive in our world.
With CIHR support, the organization recently developed the Science with Impact workshop to help provide researchers with quality training resources to support their youth and public outreach activities.
The Science with Impact training package is a workshop in educational and communication methods. Consisting of a video, facilitor's handbook, and individual workbooks, it combines visual, participatory activities, and individual study in a flexible format that can be presented in a 2-8 hour workshop, depending on need.
Why not organize a Science with Impact training in your institution?

"Let's Talk Science is grateful for the outstanding support of The Canadian Institutes of Health Research in the development and publication of the Science with Impact resource. Interacting with a researcher can have a tremendous impact on youth attitudes towards science and their subsequent course and career choices. We are delighted that increasing numbers of Canadian scientists are becoming involved in outreach activities and we developed Science with Impact to provide them with basic training that will ensure that their volunteer experiences are meaningful and positive."
