CIHR's Mandate
CIHR is the Government of Canada's primary health research funding agency. CIHR supports the work of more than 11,000 researchers and trainees in universities, teaching hospitals, and research institutes across Canada.
CIHR is mandated "To excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system."
RIC's Mandate
RIC's Composition
The Terms of Reference of the RIC stipulates that its external membership include representation from the following communities:
In addition to background/expertise requirements, a RIC member should have a good understanding of health research, and have experience with research integrity matters.
Time Commitment
The RIC normally convenes monthly, via teleconference, for up to 2 hours; it may convene more frequently if required. The teleconferences are usually held on the last Thursday of the month. The RIC meets in a face-to-face session once a year, in Ottawa.
Term and Conditions of Service
Members are appointed for 2-year terms, renewable once.
Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality
A member must disclose any conflict of interest in a matter under consideration by the RIC. The member may be asked to recuse him or herself if, in the view of the Chair, the conflict is material. Members must respect confidentiality with respect to all matters discussed and materials provided.
Remuneration and Expenses
RIC members are not compensated for their service; however, travel and accommodation expenses incurred while on RIC business are reimbursed in accordance with the Government of Canada Treasury Board Guidelines.
