Dr. Shane Green is the Director of Outreach at the Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) in Toronto where he also leads the OGI GE3LS (genomics-related ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues) Support Program. Shane is responsible for developing and implementing OGI's public outreach and education initiatives, which aim to increase awareness and understanding of genomics and related sciences (including stem cell research) and their social impacts, and providing GE3LS support to researchers receiving funding through OGI.
Prior to joining OGI in 2005, Shane worked with the American Medical Association (AMA) in Chicago, Illinois, as a Senior Fellow with the AMA Institute for Ethics and a Research Associate in the AMA Center for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response. His activities focused on ethical issues related to genetic research and its clinical applications, biodefense and other "dual-use" research, and scientists' social responsibilities.
Shane earned his specialized honours BSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Guelph and his PhD in Medical Biophysics (Cell and Molecular Biology Division) from the University of Toronto. He has studied and taught bioethics and research ethics through the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics, where he is currently a member of the Clinical, Organizational and Research Ethics (CORE) Network and the Research and Education in Research Ethics ((RE)2) Group, and has served on the Research Ethics Boards of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, in Toronto. He has published numerous articles in the scientific and bioethics literature.
