Café Scientifique - All I Ever Do is Wait! Putting an End to Health Care Wait Times

Tuesday, February 19th 2008, 6pm
Mercury Lounge
Ottawa, ON

This CIHR corporate-led Café delved into a topic that has topped both the political and public agenda for years: wait times in Canada.

A dynamic and leading group of research experts from across the country engaged Ottawa citizens in a lively and evidence-informed discussion on what's behind wait times in Canada and what we can do to address them.

Dr. Colleen Flood moderated the Café, fielding a variety of challenging questions from the public to the panelists. The panelists - Dr. Cy Frank (Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute & University of Calgary), Dr. Marie-Pascale Pomey (University of Montreal), Dr. Claudia Sanmartin (Statistics Canada) and Dr. Andreas Laupacis (Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute & University of Toronto) - are well known and highly regarded experts in the area of wait times and together did a fabulous job discussing the very tough questions raised by the public. Examples include "What's really behind wait times in Canada?", "Why do Canadians have to wait for care? Why can't we purchase private insurance to bypass the wait list?", "Will more money fix the problem?" and "Is privatization the solution?".
