Café Scientifique - Private Finance and Canadian Medicare: Kill or Cure?
Wednesday, February 27th 2008, 5:30pmL'Espresso bar Mercurio
Toronto, ON
Every year, healthcare eats up a larger share of provincial budgets and as questions arise regarding the "sustainability of Medicare," private finance is increasingly touted as a solution. With claims and counterclaims on the issue flying furiously, a lot of misinformation is generated in the process. Not surprisingly, L'Espresso bar Mercurio was filled to capacity with over 120 Torontonians (on the coldest night of Toronto's winter) keen to hear what the experts have to say about the "kill or cure" effect of private finance on the Canadian Medicare system and eager to share their own views and opinions.
The public heard evidence-informed and thought-provoking presentations from four of Canada's leading experts in the field of health care financing: Mark Stabile (Director and Associate Professor, School of Public Policy and Governance, University of Toronto), Bill Robson (President and CEO, C.D. Howe Institute), Carolyn H. Tuohy (Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Senior Fellow, School of Public Policy and Governance, University of Toronto), and Terry Sullivan (President and CEO, Cancer Care Ontario). Dr. Colleen Flood, who is a renowned expert in the field of health care financing herself, moderated the Café and opened the discussion up for a fantastic and lively public debate.
IHSPR congratulates Dr. Carolyn H. Tuohy on her successful Café Scientifique grant application and thanks her for organizing a fantastic Café that helped cut through some of the confusion and misinformation surrounding the public vs. private health care financing debate.
