Jonathan Lomas

Jonathan Lomas is recognized as an international leader for his work exploring the role and impact of research evidence in health systems decision-making and is viewed in Canada as the godfather of knowledge translation. He is the inaugural and former CEO of the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, prior to which he co-founded the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada - an applied research group with a strong emphasis on research dissemination and uptake. He is well-respected both in Canada and abroad, acting as a consultant to national and provincial governments, as well as providing research and advice to various non-governmental organizations, task forces and inquiries. Mr. Lomas maintains that his greatest joy and any legacy was found in the students and staff whom he had the pleasure of teaching, mentoring and learning from during his career.

The Jonathan Lomas KT Doctoral Research Award Supplement

The Jonathan Lomas KT Doctoral Research Award Supplement is offered to the highest ranked and funded candidate from each Doctoral Research Award competition who has applied to, and been deemed relevant for, the Knowledge Translation Priority Announcement.

This award supplement consists of a $5,000 supplement to the research allowance of a regular Doctoral Research Award. The supplement to the research allowance is intended to be used mainly for travel to national or international conferences, workshops or meetings related to the award recipient's research.

In addition to the standard KT activities of presenting research findings to targeted audiences and producing lay summaries for dissemination, recipients of the KT award supplement are expected to undertake one of the following activities:

  • Present at a CIHR summer institute, CIHR lunch and learn session, or KT trainee network event;
  • Create a short podcast for posting on the CIHR website; or
  • Carry out a clearly defined activity to be proposed to and approved by the Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch.

Associated costs will be covered by CIHR and activities will be undertaken in coordination with the Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch.
