Monique Bégin

For the last 30 years, the Honourable Monique Bégin has played a pivotal role in promoting health sciences through research, scholarship and public policy debate. A social scientist, she was the executive secretary of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women (1967-70) and in 1972 became the first woman in Quebec elected to the House of Commons. As Minister of Health and Welfare from 1977-1984, she legislated the Canada Health Act of 1984. Since 2005, Monique Bégin has been serving as commissioner with the WHO's Commission on Social Determinants of Health. An academic since she left politics, she taught in Women's Studies at Carleton and Ottawa University before serving as Dean of Health Sciences at University of Ottawa (1990-1997) where she is currently a Visiting Professor in Health Administration at the Telfer School of Management.

The Monique Bégin KT New Investigator Salary Award Supplement

The Monique Bégin KT New Investigator Salary Award Supplement is offered to the highest ranked and funded candidate from each New Investigator competition who has applied to, and been deemed relevant for, the Knowledge Translation Priority Announcement.

This award supplement consists of a $5,000 research allowance that is intended to be used mainly for travel to national or international conferences, workshops or meetings related to the award recipient's research.

In addition to the standard KT activities of presenting research findings to targeted audiences and producing lay summaries for dissemination, recipients of the KT award supplement are expected to undertake one of the following activities:

  • Present at a CIHR summer institute, CIHR lunch and learn session, or KT trainee network event;
  • Create a short podcast for posting on the CIHR website; or
  • Carry out a clearly defined activity to be proposed to and approved by the Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch.

Associated costs will be covered by CIHR and activities will be undertaken in coordination with the Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch.
