(2008-10-03) The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry has announced the implementation of a new and prestigious program that aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students: the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Program. This program aims to support students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies and leadership skills. Vanier CGS nominees will be evaluated by agency-specific multidisciplinary Peer Review Committees that will forward selected nominations to a blue-ribbon independent Inter-Agency Selection Board. The Board will recommend Vanier CGS recipients, and will comprise world-renown Canadian and international experts.

The Canada Graduate Scholarship Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-FSS) Program is a Tri-Agency (SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR) program that will support high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions outside of Canada. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-FSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated research institutions and universities or other research institutions outside of Canada.
