Facts and Figures

In 2007-08, CIHR:
  • had expenditures of $974.1M;
  • supported nearly 12,000 health researchers and trainees at 280 research institutions in every province of Canada;
  • received 3625 applications from the Open Operating Grants Program competitions, of which 2384 were considered very good or excellent by peer review, and of which 816, or just over one-third of the applications considered very good or excellent, were funded;
  • provided open operating grants to researchers with an average value of $119,000;
  • had 311 partnership agreements with 247 partners;
  • benefited from 2,400 peer reviewers donating an average of 15 days work to assess research proposals (equalling 36,000 days of donated work);
  • held 24 Café Scientifiques, bringing researchers together with the public; and
  • reached 21,842 students through its Synapse youth engagement program.

Over its lifetime, CIHR has:

  • established more than 830 partnership agreements with over 400 organizations;
  • leveraged more than $716.2M in additional funding for CIHR-led health research; and 
  • established international linkages1 with researchers from more than 50 countries.

1: International linkages includes any funded grants where at least one of the research team members declared that they belong to a primary institution and/or research institution outside Canada and includes any awards held by awardees whose primary institution and/or research institution was declared as being outside Canada. It also includes all funded grants/awards on a predefined list of international initiatives.
