RMNI - Fall 2008 Update
Current Funding OpportunitiesThe Cancer Stem Cell Consortium and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to Collaborate on Disease Team Research Awards
One of the first initiatives of the international partnership between the Cancer Stem Cell Consortium (CSCC) and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) will be to launch a Disease Team Research Awards program that supports multi-disciplinary teams of scientists who conduct research that results in cell-based therapy or a therapy derived from stem cell assays for a particular disease or serious injury. Canadian scientists who plan to collaborate with Californian colleagues in a joint Disease Team application must register with the CSCC prior to November 17, 2008.

Upcoming Funding Opportunities
Catalyst Grants: (a) Inventions - Tools, Techniques and Devices Grants; and (b) High-Risk, High-Benefit Grants (December 2008)
The RMNI has partnered with the CIHR Institutes of Genetics on their Catalyst Grant funding opportunity scheduled to be launched in December 2008. This funding opportunity is designed to support two unique areas of strategic investment: (i) Invention - Tools, Techniques and Devices; and (ii) High-Risk, High-Benefit Research. RMNI will support applications in any eligible research area of its current mandate.
Knowledge Synthesis Grant (December 2008)
RMNI will be partnering with CIHR's Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange Branch on this funding opportunity which aims to support teams of researchers and decision makers / knowledge users to produce knowledge syntheses and scoping reviews. RMNI will provide funding support through this opportunity based on the research priorities identified at the Canadian Workshop on Multidisciplinary Research on Nanotechnology.
Look for more details to be coming soon on both opportunities.
Results of RMNI Emerging Team Grant (July 2007)
This announcement provided research support in the areas of Nanotechnology Applied to Health (Nanomedicine), Stem Cells, Tissue Engineering, and Rehabilitation Sciences.
After the letter of intent (LOI) review, 26 applications were received for this competition, of which 9 were approved for funding. The results have recently been forwarded to nominated principal applicants and full results will be posted on the CIHR website shortly.
Recent Workshops
Canadian Workshop on Multidisciplinary Research on Nanotechnology: Gaps, Opportunities and Priorities, January 22-24, 2008, Edmonton, Alberta
Experts and interested stakeholders came together to discuss and identify priorities for research on nanotechnology in Canada, particularly as they relate to NE3LS issues (i.e. nanotechnology ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues), health impacts and risks, and the regulatory mechanisms needed to address them.
The final workshop report is now complete. It will be posted on CIHR's web site, and an electronic copy will be sent to all participants shortly. If you would like to receive a copy of the report, please contact Yumna Kanda at yumna.kanda@cihr-irsc.gc.ca.
Regenerative Medicine and Nanomedicine Initiative (RMNI) Day, October 23, 2008, Ottawa, Ontario
CIHR's RMNI Day was held primarily for CIHR staff to increase awareness and understanding about one of CIHR's key strategic programs. The event was a great success and we would like to thank all those who attended, with a special thanks to the three speakers who all gave excellent presentations (Dr. Bin Hu, University of Calgary, Dr. John Pezacki, National Research Council, and Dr. Jacques Galipeau, McGill University).
