Description

IHSPR has launched this competition for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and new investigators to present their own research at annual or other meetings including international conferences which are related to the Institute's mandate.

Award

The maximum amount for a single award shall not exceed CDN$1,500. All travels and the conference itself must happen after the application deadline.

  • Accommodation expenses
  • Per diem for meals
  • Conference registration fees
  • Printing costs (e.g. posters)

Eligibility

All conferences (including international meetings) related to the Institute's mandate are eligible under this program. Priority will be given to first-time applicants.

  1. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be one of the following at the time of application:
    1. A trainee: must be registered in a Master's or Doctoral program OR be at the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stage.
    2. An independent researcher (New Investigator): must have held a full time research appointment (e.g., faculty appointment providing eligibility to apply for grants and/or supervise trainees) for a period of no longer than 60 months. Time spent in research appointments in a non-academic setting (e.g., industry, government) count towards the 60-month limit if the candidate has been actively engaged in research, as demonstrated by the candidate's publication record, and the candidate was not considered to be in training (e.g., as a student or postdoctoral fellow). Please see the complete eligibility criteria. Note that bullets 7 and 8 do not apply to this award.
  2. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be the first author and presenter of the presentation or poster.
  3. Individuals are limited to one CIHR ICS Travel Award application per competition.
  4. Only one ICS Travel Award will be awarded to a recipient in any fiscal year.
  5. Travel must occur at least 9 weeks after the current competition application deadline and no later than 9 months after the deadline.
  6. ICS Travel Awards are available to Canadians studying within Canada and abroad and to Canadians and non-Canadians affiliated with a Canadian Institution at the time of the application deadline.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be assessed according to the criteria as described below. Instructions specific to each of the criteria are as follows:

Relevance and Impact:

  • Relevance of the research project to be presented to the mandate and/or strategic research priority areas of the selected CIHR Institute;
  • Relevance of the conference to the mandate and/or the strategic research priority areas of the selected CIHR Institute;
  • Potential impact of attending the conference, including the research presentation, on the career of the applicant;
  • Potential impact of the applicant's research presentation on the relevant research community, organizations, stakeholders and health research in Canada (if applicable).

Strength of the Applicant and the Application:

  • Demonstrated excellence in research (i.e., academic achievement, quality of contributions to research, research and leadership experience) reflected in the applicant's curriculum vitae and letter of support from the sponsor (supervisor, institution);
  • Demonstrated strength of the applicant based on the letter of support from the sponsor (supervisor, institution) and applicant's curriculum vitae;
  • Clarity of the overall application, objective(s) and rationale;
  • Appropriate justification of budget and financial need.
