Administrators

  • Definition:
    • Administrators fall into two primary groups.
      • Administrators at research institutions such as the Ottawa Heart Institute who manage the operations of the institute and also conduct research.
      • University Research Administrators do not conduct research themselves. Instead, they monitor the Funding Opportunities Database (FOD) for funding opportunities that their professors and students could apply for and then manage the submission paperwork on behalf of the professors and students. The administrators are usually members of Canadian Association of University Research Administrators (CAURA).

Doctoral students

  • Definition:
    • Students enrolled in a doctoral program at a university. Doctoral students are working towards their doctoral degrees. To qualify for a doctoral degree program, they must have completed an undergraduate degree and in most cases, a master's degree. However, some doctoral programs do not require a candidate have master's degree – it could allow students into the doctoral program directly from an undergraduate program.

Research associates

  • Definition:
    • A researcher who has completed formal training in research in a discipline relevant to health research, usually a Masters or PhD or equivalent qualification (MD), and is employed by an institution. The research associate is paid by research grants or contracts to work in collaboration with an investigator. They normally have more than two years of post-PhD research experience; that is, they have had at least two years of experience as postdoctoral fellows or the equivalent. They are not a permanent employee because their continued employment depends on continuing support from research grants or contracts. Although research associates may contribute substantially to the intellectual content of the research, they continue to work under the supervision another researcher, i.e., they are not independent researchers. A research associate may also contribute to, but is not ultimately responsible for, the supervision of staff, including other research associates and trainees, at the discretion of the supervising researcher.
