Survivorship: Life After Cancer

Cancer touches us all. With almost 700,000 Canadians currently living with the disease, the odds are strong that everyone knows someone who has cancer, or that someone in their family has it, or they themselves have it. But the news is not grim. The highest-ever number of Canadians living with cancer can be attributed in large part to better diagnosis and treatment. More people are diagnosed earlier and are surviving the disease.

CIHR-funded researchers are studying this new field of survivorship to find ways to help women who beat breast cancer get fit and to make sure young people who overcome the disease have access to the health care they need. Researchers are also studying what happens when cancer cannot be overcome so that patients and their families receive dignified, high-quality end-of-life care. Throughout the month of April, visit the CIHR website to learn more about the latest research into cancer survivorship.
