IHSPR e-Bulletin – April 2009

A Message from the Scientific Director

Dear Health Services and Policy Research Community,

One of CIHR-IHSPR's Strategic Goals is to support the training and development of the brightest minds in health services and policy research, because only by building Canadian research capacity will we be ready to meet tomorrow's health system challenges. In order to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of graduate and post-graduate students in Canada, each year CIHR-IHSPR holds the Rising Star award competition. This award is presented to health services and policy research trainees who have demonstrated research excellence and innovative knowledge translation initiatives early on in their careers. It is my pleasure to announce this year's CIHR-IHSPR Rising Stars: Mylaine Breton, University of Montreal; Emmanuel Guindon, McMaster University; Naomi Jones, Queen's University; Andrea Tricco, University of Ottawa; and Michael Wilson, McMaster University. More information about these up-and-coming researchers is available on our website.

This year, in addition to offering an award of $1000, we are thrilled to showcase the Rising Star winners at a special concurrent session at the annual Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) Conference this May. This event is Canada's pre-eminent health services and policy research conference and attracts leading researchers, decision makers, and trainees from across the country. Our Rising Stars will present their research and KT initiatives alongside a decision maker panel, which will offer valuable tips for communicating effectively with decision makers. The panel features Lillian Bayne, President of CAHSPR; Chris Eagle, Chief Operating Officer (Urban) of Alberta Health Services; Steven Lewis, CAHSPR Conference Co-Chair 2009; and Maureen O'Neil, President and CEO of the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. I extend a warm invitation to you to join us at this exciting session where you will have the opportunity to meet the Rising Stars, hear more about their research and KT initiatives, and learn strategies for getting your research into the hands of decision makers.

I would like to thank all those who applied and the members of the Rising Star merit review panel for helping to make this award a great success. I encourage students and their mentors to start thinking about next year's award, and I hope to see you all at the 2009 Annual CAHPSR conference.

Sincerely,
Colleen M. Flood

Start the Discussion: Host a CIHR Café Scientifique - Request for Applications
CIHR launched its Café Scientifique program as an outreach initiative that would provide answers to questions of popular interest to the general public. CIHR Cafés are typically held in bars or cafés, and involve a panel of experts who specialize in the topic at-hand. The primary point of these events is accessibility: to be a member of the audience, you don't have to have a science degree. CIHR organizes its own Café events but also establishes partnerships with non-profit organizations, universities, research centres, science centres and museums across Canada. If successful, these Café Scientifique partners can expect to receive $3,000 in funding so that they can host their own Café.

The University of Ottawa's Cochrane Center now offers Canadians free access to the health information found in The Cochrane Library
Canadians are one click away from the best available evidence on which health treatments work, which ones don't, and which may cause harm. As of April 15, everyone in Canada with Internet access will be able to view the full content of The Cochrane Library, which provides evaluations of health treatments. This nine-month pilot project provides a national subscription for Canadians to have access to the wealth of information in The Cochrane Library.
