Role of Governing Council

Governing Council oversees the direction and management of CIHR. It develops strategic directions, goals and policies; evaluates the agency's overall performance; and approves the budget.

Responsibilities, conferred under the CIHR Act are:

  • developing CIHR's strategic directions, goals and policies;
  • evaluating CIHR's overall performance, including with respect to achievement of its objectives;
  • approving CIHR's budget;
  • establishing, maintaining and terminating the Institutes;
  • determining the mandate of the Institutes;
  • appointing Scientific Directors and Institute Advisory Board members;
  • reviewing the mandate and performance of CIHR institutes at least once every five years.

The Governing Council, which meets face-to-face at least three times a year and once in a Retreat also provides advice to the Minister of Health.

Members of the Governing Council are not remunerated.
