1. Funding Opportunities: IHDCYH Regular Programs
1. Priority Announcements - Operating Grants: Start-up Grants for New Investigators
IHDCYH offers start-up grants for new investigators through the priority announcements for the CIHR March and September open operating grants competitions. These one-year grants of up to $100,000 are offered only to investigators with less than 6 years of experience as independent investigator since their first academic appointment (including experience outside Canada), and who have never held a CIHR grant as principal investigator (including the SKF/HDCYH New Investigators Grants Program). More information about eligibility criteria, the relevance form, and how to apply is available on the Institute's website. The next application deadline (registration) is August 17, 2009.
2. Priority Announcements - New Investigator Awards
The objective of this priority announcement is to foster and augment capacity in the areas of health services, knowledge translation, ethics, and environmental contaminants research in reproductive and child health. IHDCYH offers new investigator awards for the CIHR Fall open competition. More details are posted on our website. The next application deadline is September 15, 2009.
3.IHDCYH Workshop & Conference Funding Programs
The Institute has developed 4 funding programs (continuous launch cycle) designed to encourage research and facilitate knowledge translation within its community:
Workshops (Meetings, Planning, and Dissemination (MPD) Grants)
The Institute provides support or partial support up to $10,000 towards workshops or small meetings of investigators that have direct relevance to the Institute's mandate and research priorities. These MPD grants are intended for ad hoc stand-alone meetings, not for repeated annual (or other regular interval) meetings or conferences. Applications are accepted 3 times a year. The next launch is expected to occur at the end of July 2009 with an application deadline of October 1, 2009. For more information, please consult the MPD grant program description.
Research Trainee Travel Awards
CIHR-IHDCYH offers awards up to $1,000 for research trainees (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to present their own research at annual (or other regular interval) regional, national, or international meetings related to the Institute's mandate. The next application deadlines are October 1, 2009 and January 15, 2010. More information is available on our website.
IHDCYH Skills Update Travel Awards
CIHR-IHDCYH provides funding to allow postdoctoral fellows and investigators to visit research centres that will enable the acquisition for specialized skills or research experience related to the Institute's mandate. The maximum amount for a single award varies from $5,000 to $10,000 (depending on seniority) to cover travel costs and accommodation expenses. The application deadline is April 15, 2010. More information about eligibility criteria and how to apply is available on the Institute's website.
Lectureships in Reproductive and Child Health
The Institute provides support up to $2,500 to fund presentations by established reproductive and child health researchers at national or international research conferences or events related to the Institute's mandate. The next application deadline is October 1, 2009. More information about eligibility criteria and how to apply is available on the Institute's website.
2. Funding Opportunities: New IHDCYH Programs
1. India-Canada Collaborative Teams in Childhood Obesity Research
CIHR-IHDCYH, in partnership with the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has launched a new finding opportunity on childhood obesity. The purpose of this joint initiative is to create knowledge and build capacity in understanding the causes and prevention of childhood obesity and thereby reduce the burden of obesity and its chronic disease sequelae in both countries. This program calls for collaborative teams co-led by Canadian and Indian principal investigators with a long-term goal of fostering the long-term institutional partnership involving basic/fundamental, clinical, health services and population health researchers from both countries, and training opportunities for PhD student and/or postdoctoral fellows. The application deadline for letters of intent is October 1, 2009. For more information on the eligibility criteria the research areas, please visit the CIHR Funding Opportunities Database.
2. Catalyst Grant: Psychosocial Issues Related to Assisted Human Reproduction (AHR)
CIHR-IHDCYH, the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and Assisted Human Reproduction Canada have launched a funding opportunity designed to encourage new and established investigators to undertake research on psychosocial issues related to assisted human reproduction. The term 'psychosocial' refers to phenomena that have psychological and/or social factors; AHR is any activity undertaken for the purpose of facilitating human reproduction through assisted means. The application deadline (registration) is September 21, 2009. More information about this catalyst grant program is available in the CIHR Funding Opportunities Database.

5. CIHR-IHDCYH News
1. Changes to the CIHR Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) Program
Since June 2009, the CIHR-RCT Program has been re-integrated to the Open Operating Grants Program (OOGP). If the budget requested is greater than or equal to $250,000 per year, researchers must apply to the RCT peer review committee. If the budget requested is less than $250,000 per year, researchers can choose whether to apply to the most relevant content peer review committee or to the RCT peer review committee. Please refer to the OOGP guidelines on the CIHR Website for program specific details.
Furthermore, RCTs are now an available option within other funding opportunities, such as requests for applications (RFAs), whenever appropriate for the objectives of those funding opportunities. CIHR staff will decide on the most appropriate review committee, whether ad hoc or an existing review committee, for the review of the applications.
2. PPTOXII: Role of Environmental Stressors in the Development of Origins of Disease
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and their partners are co-sponsoring an international conference entitled "PPTOXII: Role of Environmental Stressors in the Development of Origins of Disease". The conference will be held in Miami Beach, Florida, on December 7-10, 2009. For more information, please visit the Society of Toxicology website.
