CIHR Funding Opportunities

New CIHR Funding Opportunity in Drug Safety and Effectiveness Research
The CIHR coordinating office of the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network (DSEN) initiative is pleased to announce the recent launch of the CIHR Catalyst Grant in Post Market Drug Safety and Effectiveness Research This funding opportunity is intended to provide one year of support for research projects that address gaps in knowledge concerning real-world drug safety and effectiveness. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $1,000,000 and the maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $100,000 for up to one year. In order to provide further detail on the objectives and funding pool structure of this funding opportunity a teleconference may be scheduled for interested applicants. CIHR-IHSPR and IPPH Methods and Tools Grants - Advancing Theoretical and Methodological Innovations in Health Research
The objective of these grants is to support research that advances the theories, conceptual frameworks, methods, and tools employed in the conduct of high-quality health services and policy research.

Partnerships in Health Systems Improvement
The purpose of PHSI is to support teams of researchers and decision makers interested in conducting applied and policy-relevant health research that is useful to health system managers and/or policy makers and strengthens the Canadian health care system. Successful applicant teams will conduct health services, health systems and policy research projects of up to three years in length in policy-relevant areas deemed to be of priority by Canada's health system decision makers. PHSI welcomes any health services, health systems and policy research questions as long as they respond to decision maker/knowledge user identified needs.

Meetings, Planning, and Dissemination (MPD) Grants
Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grants are intended to provide support for meetings, planning and/or dissemination activities consistent with the mandate of CIHR and relevant to CIHR Institutes, Initiatives, or Branches.

  • Health Services and Policy Research MPD
    Purpose: To support health services and policy research development and knowledge translation and exchange activities that contribute to the advancement of the following strategic research and knowledge exchange priority areas: the Listening for Direction (LfD) III Themes and the CIHR-IHSPR Priority Research Areas.
    Amount: The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $20,000 for up to one year.

  • Partnerships for Health System Improvement MPD
    Purpose: To provide development funds for researchers and/or decision makers to facilitate the formation and development of partnerships with a view to PHSI. It supports planning meetings and other activities that help potential teams of researchers and decision makers in building partnerships and identifying emerging issues and priorities that could potentially be addressed by projects funded in the PHSI competition.
    Amount: The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $15,000 for up to one year.

CIHR Events

CIHR Primary Health Care Summit - January 18-19, Toronto
CIHR will be hosting a major primary health care Summit, "Patient-Oriented Primary Care - Scaling Up Innovation " which will take place January 18-19, 2010 in Toronto, Ontario. With this summit, we hope to attract national and international attention to the issue of primary care reform and bring together primary care researchers and decision makers in order to catalyze new collaborations and innovative thinking. Speakers include David Colin-Thomé, National Clinical Director for Primary Care for the National Health Service UK; Barbara Starfield, Professor, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University; Vivek Goel, President and CEO of the Ontario Agency of Health Promotion and Protection; Louise Nasmith , Principal, College of Health Disciplines, University of British Columbia; and more to come!

New paper: Open access archiving and article citations within health services and policy research
Devon Greyson, Dr. Steve Morgan, and their colleagues at the University of British Columbia Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) have conducted an analysis comparing the rates of citations of open access (OA) health services and policy research articles relative to non-OA articles: "Adjusting for potential confounders we found that OA archived articles were 60% more likely to be cited at least once and, once cited, were cited 29% more than non-OA articles."

New report: Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age
Maintaining the integrity and accessibility of research data in a rapidly evolving digital age will take the collective efforts of universities and other research institutions, journals, agencies, and individual scientists, says a new report from the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine, which recommends principles to guide these stakeholders in generating, sharing, and maintaining scientific data.

Congratulations to Dr. Nuala Kenny on being awarded the Dr.William Marsden Award in Medical Ethics
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) announced that Dr. Nuala Kenny, will be the recipient of its 2009 Dr.William Marsden Award in Medical Ethics. It recognizes a member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership, commitment and dedication to the cause of advancing and promoting excellence in the field of medical ethics in Canada.

Tame Economists Need Not Apply: Career Lessons from the 2008 CAHSPR Conference
A group of student interviewers sat down with distinguished conference attendees at the 2008 Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research Conference. These leaders in the field shared a wealth of advice about career planning (don't), seizing opportunities (do) and connecting with colleagues and community (do often). They learned that a passion for lifelong learning, a willingness to get ordinary things done and a little luck go a long way towards career success.
