On behalf of the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), it is my pleasure to welcome you to the eighth annual Canadian Health Research Awards.

At CIHR, we don't just invest in research excellence; we celebrate it. The researchers receiving awards tonight have each made invaluable contributions to their fields, and tonight we are here to applaud them.

In addition to recognizing groundbreaking discovery and innovation, we are here to spread the word about the tremendous impact that health research can have on peoples' lives. This year's award winners have not only advanced our understanding of the human mind and body, they have improved Canadians' quality of life.

This year, CIHR is delighted to join forces with the very prestigious Prix Galien Canada. For the past 15 years, Prix Galien has been recognizing the greatest achievements in Canadian biopharmaceutical research. We hope tonight marks the beginning of a long and productive partnership that will help bridge the public and private worlds of health research.

Finally, I would like to congratulate this year's award winners, and thank them for their dedication to their work.
