The Visiting Professor Program at CIHR's Institute of Gender and Health, Vancouver, BC

The Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) invites applications from prospective Visiting Professors. This opportunity is open to faculty members on leave from their present academic, research or policy appointments, who wish to spend one to six months in a university environment in order to conduct scholarly work related to gender, sex and health. IGH is based at the University of British Columbia, a major university in Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver is located on Canada's spectacular West Coast and is consistently ranked as one of the world's most livable cities.

IGH will provide Visiting Professors with the use of office space, as well as access to a computer, printer and photocopier. Visiting Professors may also make use of the amenities available at the University of British Columbia, including its research library, the second-largest in Canada. The Institute is not able to provide Visiting Professors with access to lab facilities. IGH is unable to provide Visiting Professors with a salary, stipend, research funding, health insurance, or travel or moving reimbursement. Prospective Visiting Professors must have their own financial support for the duration of their stay. The program is especially suitable for researchers with outside grant support or sabbatical support from their home institutions.

Visiting Professors will be expected to give a public lecture during their term at IGH and will be encouraged to interact with members of Vancouver's thriving gender, sex and health research community. Visiting Professors are required to acknowledge IGH in any publications that result from their time spent at the Institute.

The program is open to tenure stream faculty members at all career stages. Visiting Professors are selected through a competitive application process. IGH will accept Visiting Professor applications on an ongoing basis. A complete application package consists of:

  • A two-page letter of intent describing your research interests and the project(s) you plan to work on while at IGH. Your letter should include your research objectives, and a description of the significance of your project(s)
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A publication or writing sample related to gender, sex and health
  • A letter of reference

Please submit your application package by e-mail to Zena Sharman (zsharman@exchange.ubc.ca).
