1. Funding Opportunities: IHDCYH Regular Programs

1. Priority Announcement - Operating Grants: Start-up Grants for New Investigators

IHDCYH offers start-up grants for new investigators through the priority announcements for the CIHR March and September open operating grants competitions. These one-year grants of up to $100,000 are offered only to independent investigators with less than 6 years of experience since their first academic appointment (including experience outside Canada), and who have never held a CIHR grant as principal investigator (including the SKF/IHDCYH New Investigators Grants Program). 2. IHDCYH Workshop & Conference Funding Programs

The Institute has developed 4 funding programs (continuous launch cycle) designed to encourage research and facilitate knowledge translation within its community:

Workshops (Meetings, Planning, and Dissemination (MPD) Grants)
The Institute provides support or partial support up to $10,000 towards workshops or small meetings that have direct relevance to the Institute's mandate and research priorities. These MPD grants are intended for ad hoc stand-alone meetings, not for repeated annual (or other regular interval) meetings or conferences. Applications are accepted 3 times a year. The next application deadline is February 17th, 2010.

IHDCYH Lectureships in Reproductive and Child Health
The Institute provides support up to $2,500 to fund presentations by established reproductive and child health researchers at national or international research conferences or events related to the Institute's mandate. The next application deadline is April 15th, 2010.

Research Trainee Travel Awards
CIHR-IHDCYH offers awards up to $1,000 for research trainees (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to present their own research at annual (or other regular interval) regional, national, or international meetings related to the Institute's mandate. The next application deadlines are January 15th and April 15th, 2010.

IHDCYH Skills Update Travel Awards
CIHR-IHDCYH provides funding to allow postdoctoral fellows and independent investigators to visit research centres to acquire specialized skills or research experience related to the Institute's mandate. The maximum amount for a single award varies from $5,000 to $10,000 (depending on seniority) to cover travel costs and accommodation expenses. The application deadline is April 15th, 2010.

2. New IHDCYH Funding Opportunity

International Program on the Early Origins of Addiction in Children and Youth
The Academy of Finland, IHDCYH, and their partners are launching a second call on the early origins of addiction in children and youth. The aim of this program is to promote long-term systematic research collaboration, as well as to establish and strengthen research collaboration networks between Finland and Canada. The application deadline to send a letter of intent is March 5th, 2010. For more information about the research priorities, please visit the Academy of Finland website ("January 2010 call" document in PDF, section 3.2, page 21). Specific information about the application process for Canadian researchers will be available later in January on the CIHR Funding Opportunities Database.

3. Other Funding Opportunity

Built Environment: Population Health Intervention Research
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, in partnership with CIHR Institutes, has launched a funding opportunity on built environment and population health intervention research. Through this strategic initiative, the funding partners wish to solicit multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral proposals that address the link between the built environment and health and focus on solutions at the population level. Letters of intent are due on March 1st, 2010. For more information, please consult the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's website.

Funding opportunities co-sponsored by CIHR-IHDCYH and funding opportunities that may be of interest to the Institute's research community can be found on CIHR's Funding Opportunities Database.

4. Funding Decisions

A complete list of recent IHDCYH-related funding decisions is available on the CIHR website.

5. IHDCYH News

1. 6th Annual NICHD-IHDCYH Summer Institutes

The 6th Annual Summer Institutes in Maternal-Fetal Pharmacology and in Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology organized by NICHD and IHDCYH will be held during the week of July 11 to 17, 2010, in St. Michaels, Maryland. Eligible applicants are invited to submit an application to IHDCYH by April 1st, 2010. More information regarding these unique training opportunities is available on the Institute's website.

2. Inventory of Pregnancy and Birth Cohort Studies

CIHR, in partnership with the Maternal, Infant, Child and Youth Research Network (MICYRN) and the Strategic Knowledge Cluster on Early Childhood Development (SKC-ECD), has compiled an Inventory of pregnancy and birth cohort studies in Canada. The inventory lists Canadian cohort studies that are completed, ongoing, or in development, provides detailed information on the content and design of those studies, compares features amongst studies to facilitate both national and international comparisons, and indicates opportunities for collaboration. This initial version provides information on over 45 studies.

The summary table and the detailed table can be accessed through the MICYRN or SKC-ECD websites.
For a complete description of these tables, as well as more information on the rationale behind the inventory and its objectives, please visit the Inventory of Pregnancy and Birth Cohort Studies in Canada.

3. The Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth

Active Healthy Kids Canada is a national organization committed to providing expertise and direction to policy makers and the public on how to increase, and effectively allocate resources and attention towards, physical activity for Canadian children and youth. For 5 years, the Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth has consolidated research knowledge to drive social action for policy change. The Report Card presents knowledge in a format that can be easily accessed by media, governments, NGOs, practitioners and researchers to inform messaging, policies, programs, and research initiatives that can increase physical activity opportunities for children and youth. It also notes research gap areas to help drive new inquiry regarding physical activity for children and youth. The sixth annual Report Card will be released on April 27th, 2010.

4. Internationalization of CIHR Funding Policy and Program Tools - Grants and Awards Guide Update

CIHR wishes to clarify the ways in which funded researchers and awardees can participate in international collaboration and global health research. As outlined in the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide Global Health Research section (section 1-A2) and International Collaborations section (section 1-A3), CIHR contributes to and supports international research projects and collaborations. These projects and collaborations address a range of research areas, including but not limited to established priorities in "global health research," and contribute to the development of health research capacity both internationally and at home. For more details, please consult the updated Grants and Awards Guide.

6. Meetings/Events

1.CIHR Primary Care Summit: "Patient-Oriented Primary Care – Scaling Up Innovation" - Toronto, Ontario - January 18-19, 2010

In January 2010, CIHR will be hosting a major primary health care summit. The goal of the summit is to foster multidisciplinary primary care collaboration among decision makers, administrators, clinicians, researchers and patient representatives in conducting and using research. The Summit will also provide Canadian and international stakeholders with an opportunity to exchange best practices in implementing primary care initiatives.

As part of the summit activities, IHDCYH is hosting a workshop on research needs in maternal and child primary care in Canada. This will be an excellent opportunity to assess the state of research in this area in Canada, to learn more about research priorities in the USA (where primary care researchers have been very active), and to reflect on potential research priorities for Canada.

For more information about the summit and to register, please visit the CIHR website.

2. Pre-congress workshop at the International Congress on Physical Activity and Public Health - Toronto, Ontario - May 5th, 2010

Active Healthy Kids Canada will be holding a pre-congress workshop and welcomes researchers, policy-makers and practitioners to attend. This session will share findings from the newly released 2010 Report Card; present information on the process, partnerships and management framework for the Report Card; and include panelists who will demonstrate how the Report Card model has been replicated and modified in municipal, provincial, and international jurisdictions. Discussion will focus on how others can also use the Report Card's knowledge exchange approach to effect change and assess progress in their communities within Canada and internationally. For more information and to register, please visit the Congress' website.

A complete list of events, including IHDCYH-sponsored and -hosted events, can be viewed on IHDCYH's Calendar of Events page.
