Course Format

This unique training opportunity features a distinguished international faculty to discuss important topics around therapeutics during pregnancy, the perinatal period, and lactation. Presently, the pregnant mother and her unborn or newborn infant are rarely included in therapeutic studies, leading to "orphaning" from the benefits of drug therapy. The main objective of the Summer Institute is to foster the development of a critical mass of researchers in this neglected area. The course format will combine expert lectures with small-group interactions and hands-on learning to encourage problem-based learning. The course includes preparatory work and assignments, which will be sent to participants one month ahead of time.

Eligibility

This year, the Summer Institute is open to participants from all countries.

The applicants must:

  1. Be graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, or clinical and non-clinical scientists (including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, pharmacologists, and toxicologists) at the early faculty stage of their career;
  2. Be actively engaged in research or enrolled in a formal research training program at the MSc, PhD, or post-doctoral level;
  3. Have demonstrated research interest in maternal-fetal pharmacology;
  4. Agree to attend the full duration of the week-long Institute.

How to Apply

The applicants must provide the following information:

  1. Curriculum vitae (CIHR Common CV or NIH Biographical Sketch are acceptable);
  2. One letter of recommendation from their research supervisor, faculty mentor, or Department head;
  3. A short cover letter (500 words or less) stating the following:
    1. Their general research interest;
    2. How the course fits with their planned career path and research;
    3. How their previous training relates to the Summer Institute;
    4. What they expect from and can contribute to the Summer Institute.

Applications must be submitted electronically to IHDCYH-IDSEA@cihr-irsc.gc.ca by April 18th, 2011.

Selection

An Institute faculty committee will select up to 20 students based on research interests, research training and experience, and potential for applying the knowledge and experience gained during the course. A letter of recommendation from a supervisor will help determine the applicant's potential impact in this field of research. The notice of decision will be sent by email to applicants by May 13th, 2011.

Travel expenses

IHDCYH will cover the following costs for selected participants from Canada and from low- or middle-income countries. Participants from other countries will have to cover their own expenses or seek support from their institutions or employers, an estimated cost of $1,100 CDN for the week-long course, in addition to travel expenses.

  • Lowest price economy air ticket from applicant's home;
  • Hotel accommodation for 6 nights;
  • All meals on course days.

The participant is responsible for any additional meals, transportation, or incidental expenses.

Once successful applicants have confirmed their participation (deadline June 1st, 2011), they will receive detailed travel and lodging information from IHDCYH.
