1. Funding Opportunities

1. a) Funding Opportunities Promoting IA Priority Areas

Catalyst Grant: Pilot Projects in Aging

This Catalyst Grant: Pilot Projects in Aging is being offered to encourage and stimulate new and established investigators to undertake new, high priority research challenges in the field of aging. It is expected that this targeted investment will enable researchers to generate preliminary data, validate methodology or tools, and/or explore novel (high risk) research ideas towards enhancing the success of subsequent applications to the CIHR open and strategic competitions focused on priority areas in aging. The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $50,000 per annum for up to one year. The registration deadline is February 15th, 2010.

Fellowship Awards - Priority Announcement

Fellowships (see Aging-Longitudinal Studies Research Priority Area) provide support for highly qualified candidates at the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad. IA will fund applications that are determined to be relevant to the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. Awards are up to $60,000 per annum for up to 3 years. The application deadline is February 12th, 2010.

IA will also award to the highest ranked IA-relevant applicant a travel allowance supplement valued at a maximum of $5,000 in year 1 of the award, through the CIHR-IA Recognition Prize in Research on Aging.

Age+ Prize

The IA Age+ Prize recognizes excellence in research on aging carried out by emerging Canadian scholars and the resulting publications. Awards are for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents from all disciplines, conducting research in aging. The award is valued at $1,000. The application deadlines are January 15th, May 1st and October 1st, 2010.

Patient/client safety

An operating grant funding opportunity addressing patient/client safety in home care in Canada will be posted shortly.

1. b) Funding Opportunities Under the Mobility in Aging Initiative

Operating Grant: Demonstration Projects in Mobility in Aging

The purpose of the "Demonstration Projects in Mobility in Aging" funding opportunity is to enhance the capacity of knowledge-users to apply research evidence to their decisions on approaches -- products, programs, services, and health system models -- that contribute to improved Mobility in Aging. The amount awarded for a single grant will typically range between $50,000 to $200,000 per annum for terms between 1 and 3 years. The registration deadline is March 1st, 2010.

Studentship

A Studentship funding opportunity promoting advancement of research to action to address the intrinsic and extrinsic challenges associated with mobility in aging will be launched shortly.

1. c) Funding Opportunities Promoting Exchange and Research to Action

Betty Havens Award for Knowledge Translation in Aging

Through the Betty Havens Award for Knowledge Translation in Aging, IA will recognize individual(s), team(s) or organization(s) that have advanced the translation of research in aging at a local or regional level. The maximum amount awarded for a single one-year award is $50,000 to recognize impact at the local or regional level in research on aging. The application deadline is May 3rd, 2010.

Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant: Aging

The Meetings, Planning and Dissemination (MPD) - Aging funding opportunity is intended to provide support for meetings, planning and/or dissemination activities that are consistent with the mandate of the CIHR Institute of Aging and stimulate research and knowledge translation and exchange.The maximum amount awarded for a single MPD - Aging grant is $5,000 for eligible recurring events and $10,000 for eligible non-recurring events, for up to one year. Requests up to $25,000 will be accepted for eligible international partnership development activities. The application deadline is February 17th, 2010.

Travel Awards in Aging

Through this trainee travel award, the IA seeks to encourage networking and exchange of ideas among emerging scholars working within its priority research areas. The award value is up to $1,000. The application deadlines are January 15th, April 1st, July 15th and October 15th 2010.

1. d) Funding Opportunities Promoting International Relations

China-Canada Joint Health Research Initiative

This funding opportunity aims to promote the development of Canadian-Chinese scientific co-operation between universities, hospitals, research institutes or affiliated research organizations in Canada and China through the support of collaborative research grants. Within the context of Aging, Gerontology and Geriatrics, IA aims to encourage research on aging processes, on functional limitations in older adults as a consequence of disease, and on determinants of healthy aging. For Canadian researchers, grants are valued up to $50,000 per annum for up to 3 years. The registration deadline is February 15, 2010.

CIHR Knowledge Translation Award

The CIHR Knowledge Translation Award 2010 honours and supports the exemplary knowledge translation efforts and activities of an exceptional individual, team or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to improving the health of individuals, providing more effective health services and products and strengthening the health care system at a national or international level. To nominate an individual, team or organization for this award please refer to the following opportunity. The application deadline is May 3rd, 2010.

Operating Grant: Population Health Intervention Research

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the prompt initiation of intervention research on rapidly unfolding programs, policies and resource distribution approaches that have the potential to impact health and health equity at the population level. The amount awarded for a single grant will single grant is $100,000 per year for up to 2 years. The letter of intent deadline is March 1st, 2010.

Grand Challenges: Point-of-Care Diagnostics Grant Opportunity

View the grant opportunity on the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative website. Letters of inquiry will be accepted until February 16, 2010.

2009-2010 Competition - Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR)

The goal of the CECR program is to create internationally recognized centres of commercialization and research expertise in four priority areas in order to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits to Canadians. The letter of Intent deadline is February 3rd, 2010.

2010 Summer Program in Aging (SPA)

June 13-17, 2010
We invite applications from trainees in research in aging at the Master's, doctoral and post-doctoral levels to apply for the 2010 Summer Program in Aging (SPA) to be held at Jasper Park Lodge, Alberta. The application process will be posted on the SPA website on January 15, with an application deadline of March 15, 2010.

Please note that the Institute of Aging plans on sending an e-bulletin in February which will include additional funding opportunities.
