Peer Review Committees and Mandates - New Investigators

CIHR New Investigators Salary Awards are provided to New Investigators, defined as researchers who have held a full time research appointment for a period of 0 to 60 months as of the competition deadline and have obtained a full time professional degree (MD, DVM, etc...) and PhD degree within the last 10 years.

Note: Applications are assigned to one of the CIHR New Investigator peer review committees based on the following:

  • the theme of the proposed research activities;
  • the applicant's educational background at the time of taking up the award;
  • the applicant's licensure status at the time of the competition's application deadline date (if applicable).

The evaluation of New Investigator applications focuses on the applicant's track record, research plan and environment/support.

Allied Health Professionals (AHP)

Reviews New Investigator Salary Award applications from licensed Allied Health Professionals, (who may or may not hold a PhD degree) and non-licensed Allied Health Professionals who do not hold a PhD degree, to assess the candidate’s promise of attaining competence as an independent investigator in biomedical, clinical, health services and/or social, cultural, environmental and population health research.

Health Professional Awards (HPA)

Reviews New Investigator Salary Award applications from licensed Health Professionals (who may or may not hold a PhD degree), and non-licensed Health Professionals who do not hold a PhD degree, to assess the candidate’s promise of attaining competence as an independent investigator in biomedical and/or clinical research.

Health Research Salary A (HSA)

Reviews New Investigator Salary Award applications from PhD holders, Health Professionals who may or may not hold a PhD degree, and non-licensed allied health professionals who hold a PhD degree, to assess the candidate’s promise of attaining competence as an independent investigator in health services and/or social, cultural, environmental and population health research.

New Investigators A (NIA)

Reviews New Investigator Salary Award applications from PhD holders, non-licensed Health Professionals who hold a PhD degree or non-licensed Allied Health Professionals who hold a PhD degree, who are within 0 to 24 months of their first independent research appointment, to assess the candidate’s promise of attaining competence as an independent investigator in biomedical and/or clinical research.

New Investigators C (NIC)

Reviews New Investigator Salary Award applications from PhD holders, non-licensed Health Professionals who hold a PhD degree or non-licensed Allied Health Professionals who hold a PhD degree, who are within 24 to 60 months of their first independent research appointment, to assess the candidate’s promise of attaining competence as an independent investigator in biomedical and/or clinical research.

Note: Health Professionals only include medical doctors (MD), doctors of veterinary medicine (DVM) and doctors of dental science (DDS). Allied Health Professionals include all other CIHR-Eligible health professions.
