CIHR Funding Opportunities

Operating Grant "Health Systems Research on H1N1 - Health systems, ethics and knowledge translation research on the implications of H1N1"

Objective: To support the prompt initiation of research focused on public health and health care system interventions for H1N1 and to study the differential effects of these responses on vulnerable populations.

Value and Term: The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is up to $100,000 for a single year.

CIHR-IHPSR is particularly interested in applications related to questions such as:

  • Was the primary healthcare sector effectively and optimally deployed in response to H1N1? What changes are needed to improve the deployment of the primary healthcare sector in future health system responses to pandemics?
  • Using a comparative analysis framework, what lessons can be learned from the experiences of other jurisdictions' healthcare system (and the primary healthcare sector in particular) responses to H1N1?
  • What can be learned about the resourcing, organization, management and response of the healthcare system to H1N1 to inform future pandemic planning and decision-making?
  • What are the medical, economic and other costs (e.g., opportunity costs) of possible transmission of H1N1 compared to those associated with practices set in place to avoid that transmission (e.g., vaccine development, health system response, etc.)?

CIHR Café Scientifique Presents - Clearing a path to mental health: How can we improve access to effective mental healthcare services?

One in five people will suffer from some form of mental illness during their lifetime, but how many of them will get the help they need? Many obstacles can block the path to accessing effective mental healthcare services. The lack of public funding for common treatments, the lack of integration among mental healthcare services and the stigma surrounding mental illness are just some of the barriers that people must break through to access mental healthcare services.

How can we better identify and eliminate these barriers? How do these obstacles differ according to the type of mental illness? What can we do to empower people to seek out treatment? How can we help people navigate the complex maze of mental healthcare services? And how can we eliminate the stigma that many people, including healthcare providers, associate with mental illness? Join us to share your thoughts and hear what experts in health services and mental health research have to say.

This free event is presented by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and its Institute of Health Services and Policy Research, in partnership with the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
