Description
The mandate of ICR is to support research based on internationally accepted standards of excellence that reduces the burden of cancer and improve the health and quality of life of cancer patients and their families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatment, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.
ICR wishes to recognize excellence in cancer research carried out by emerging Canadian scholars. Approximately 5 publication prizes are offered annually to meritorious authors of outstanding published scientific articles that focus on cancer research. Articles must describe work done in Canada that is relevant to ICR's mandate. The ICR Publication prizes are aimed at graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents from all disciplines working in the field of cancer research who have published research articles as first authors within 12 months of the application deadline. In the case of equal first co-authors, the prize will be divided equally. There will be one submission deadline per year.
Funds available
ICR's contribution to the amount available for these awards is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations, and the conditions that may be attached to them. The number of awards given per competition will be affected by the above factor as well as the number and quality of applications, and the fiscal year constraints.
ICR expects to award annually a total of 5 non-renewable publication prizes of $1,000 each.
Objectives
The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has established the Publication Prizes program to recognize significant contributions by students and trainees in the field of cancer research.
Specific objectives of this program are to:
- recognize excellence of research carried out in Canada by graduate students (Masters and PhD), post-doctoral fellows, and residents/fellow in all fields and disciplines covered by the mandate of the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research;
- recognize research contributions for which a trainee has had primary responsibility;
- promote careers in cancer research in Canada.
This program is administered under the Institute Community Support program.
Eligibility
Eligibility criteria for all CIHR research funding programs apply. Please refer to the Eligibility Requirements for CIHR Grants and Awards regarding the eligibility requirements for individuals and institutions.
Specific Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility requirements specific to this opportunity include the following:
- Supervisors, faculty members, departmental heads, etc. must nominate the candidate.

In cases where there is more than one eligible first author (e.g., if two trainees contributed equally as co-authors of a paper), please specify in your application if the eligible authors are applying for a joint prize.
Only one submission is permitted for any given article. Previous winners of ICR's Publication Prizes are not eligible.
All co-authors must be copied on the e-mail submission of the application.
Review Process and Evaluation
The award is based on the excellence of the research, its relation to the mandate of ICR, its interdisciplinary focus and its potential benefits to the health of Canadians. Individual submissions will be evaluated and ranked according to their individual and collective merit based on the following criteria:
- Relevance to the mandate of ICR: ICR is dedicated to supporting research based on internationally accepted standards of excellence that reduces the burden of cancer and improve the health and quality of life of cancer patients and their families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatment, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.
- Level of the student or trainee's contribution: quality of the research based on the level of the applicant and his/her specific contribution to conception and design of the study, acquisition of data and analysis and interpretation.
- Quality of the journal: Relevance and impact of the Journal relative to the particular field of study.
- Impact of the publication: Are the results of importance beyond the specific field of study of the applicant i.e., multidisciplinary research or consideration of the relevance of the research to the four pillars of CIHR: biomedical; clinical; health services and policy; and population and public health.
- Impact on the target audience: Potential impact of the research to the target audience and knowledge translation strategies (does the research have the potential to stimulate additional research or to be translated into products, services, policies, educational material, practice documents).
Evaluation Schedule
The evaluation committee meets annually and reviews all applications received up to and on the application deadline date.
Decisions of the evaluation committee will be communicated within twelve weeks of the application deadline. The evaluation committee is typically comprised of the Institute's Assistant Directors, members of the Institute Advisory Board, and invited researchers in the field of cancer research. ICR will notify applicants of the competition results by e-mail.
