Proposals may be targeted to a specific audience who would benefit from being better informed about the impacts of health-related research (e.g., improving communications with front-line physicians, policy-makers etc), or the scope could be more general for the greater public (e.g., proposing an event associated with a national or international initiative dedicated to increasing awareness). The competition is open to Canadian-based non-governmental and/or voluntary sector organizations sharing common priorities with the Institute of Aging. Proposals may be officially submitted by single organizations, or in partnership. The CIHR-IA will award up to four prizes of up to $10,000 each for successful aging-relevant proposals under this initiative. The application deadline is September 9th, 2011.
The IA Age+ Prize recognizes excellence in research on aging carried out by emerging Canadian scholars and the resulting publications. Awards are for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents from all disciplines, conducting research in aging. The award is valued at $1,000. The next application deadline is October 1st, 2011.
Through this trainee travel award the IA seeks to encourage networking and exchange of ideas among emerging scholars working within its priority research areas. The award value is up to $1,000. The next application deadline is July 15th, 2011.

Team Grant: China-Canada: Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders
The Team Grant: China-Canada: Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders funding opportunity is being offered to support joint team grants in the field of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders (ARD). Within CIHR, the joint program will be part of the International Collaborative Research Strategy for Alzheimer's Disease (ICRSAD). The scientific agenda for ICRSAD focuses on the early events in ARD including risk factor identification, early diagnosis, early intervention, and prevention. Funding will be provided for applications that are determined to be relevant to the following research areas: 1) Models; 2) Biomarkers and Brain Imaging; 3) Genetics/Epigenetics; 4)Drug Development; 5) Vascular Dementia, and 6) Clinical Studies. For Canadian researchers, the maximum amount per project is CAD $250,000 per year for up to four years. For Chinese researchers, the amount available per project is 3 million RMB for up to four years. The application deadline is May 6th, 2011.
International Network of Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (COEN) – Catalyst Grant Initiative
This is an initiative between funding partners in six countries - Canada, Germany, UK, Belgium Flanders, Italy and Ireland - with the objective to build productive links between research groups within recognised centres of excellence in neurodegeneration. For this call, each agency is contributing towards a CAN $7.2 million fund (including $1.5 million for Canadian team members) for collaborative pilot projects that will serve to underpin future studies in the neurodegenerative diseases. field in the areas of: 1) Prodromal state; 2) Aetiology of chronic versus acute degeneration; 3) Changes in disease over the life course; and 4) Common mechanisms between neurodegenerative diseases. Teams will combine the research strengths across at least two partner countries. The Call for Applications will be led by the Medical Research Council (MRC UK) and will detail the scientific focus identified through three priority setting workshops held in November/December 2010. The deadline for applications is June 9th, 2011.
Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant: Knowledge Translation Supplement
The Knowledge Translation (KT) Branch, through its KT Supplement Funding, provides supplemental funding to enable widespread dissemination and implementation of research findings to communities beyond the traditional scientific community so as to accelerate the capture of the benefits of health research. The maximum amount awarded for a single KT supplement is $100,000 for up to one year. CIHR has committed $2,000,000 to this opportunity. The application deadline is June 15th, 2011.
CIHR launched its Café Scientifique program as an outreach initiative that would provide answers to questions of popular interest to the general public. As a result, over 330 CIHR Café Scientifique events have been funded to provide educational and informal discussions regarding popular health topics. CIHR Cafés are typically held in bars or cafés, and involve a panel of experts who specialize in the topic at hand. The primary point of these events is accessibility: to be a member of the audience, you don't have to have a science degree. You need to be interested in learning and asking questions. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2011.
Planning Grants Available for CIHR's Roadmap Signature Initiative in Community-Based Primary Healthcare
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR) and the Office for Patient-Oriented Research are pleased to make 24 Planning Grants available as part of a major ten-year initiative to fund research that supports the delivery of high-quality community-based primary healthcare (CBPHC) across Canada. A strong foundation of research evidence in CBPHC - the first and most frequent point of contact with the healthcare system - is key in helping to achieve better health outcomes, improved equity, an overall enhanced patient experience, and other system-wide benefits.
Offered under the Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grants program, these $25,000 Planning Grants will support researchers to come together to build active and meaningful collaborations and to understand the existing CBPHC research landscape, including needs and priorities, before embarking on a full CBPHC Team Grant application in fall 2011. (Note: Teams who plan to apply for a CBPHC Team Grant are not required to apply for a CBPHC Planning Grant). The application deadline is June 15th, 2011.
For more information about the CIHR Roadmap Signature Initiative in CBPHC please RSVP for a Webinar on May 17 at 1pm EST at the CHNET-Works and visit our website.
The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education in McGill University is announcing the creation of the Bloomberg-Manulife Prize for the Promotion of Health. This academic prize, valued at $50,000-will recognize an investigator whose research over the last five years has contributed to understanding how factors such as physical activity, nutrition and psychosocial context influence personal health and well-being, and whose work has had a positive impact on the behavioural and lifestyle choices. The deadline for receipt of applications is May 20th, 2011.
