OTTAWA (May 24, 2011) - This year, more than 5 million people will die from a tobacco-related heart attack, stroke, cancer, lung ailment, or other disease. That does not include the more than 600,000 people who will die from exposure to second-hand smoke.
Countries throughout the world are instituting tobacco control measures – such as the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control – to help reduce the harm caused by smoking.
In light of World No Tobacco Day (May 31), experts from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) are available to discuss the dangers of smoking and tobacco control policies.
