Message from Phil Sherman, INMD Scientific Director
It was with great pride that I wish to announce that two inspirational researchers working in the INMD mandate area were recently honoured by induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. Drs. Lorne Tyrrell, O.C. and John Bienenstock, C.M. became two of the 88 laureates at an induction ceremony held in London, Ontario on April 28, 2011.
Dr. Tyrrell works at the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology as a Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and is the former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Lorne's exceptionally productive translational research program has focused on the study of hepatotropic viruses, including hepatitis B and hepatitis C. His research group has developed and tested nucleoside analogues as therapeutic agents in both relevant animal models and in human trials, which have altered clinical practice world-wide.
Dr. Bienenstock directs the Brain-Body Institute as a Distinguished University Professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and is the former Dean and Vice-President of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton. John's research program has defined important principles in two fields, mucosal immunology and neuroimmunophysiology. In the former, he helped define the distinct nature of immunity in mucosal tissues and how best to immunize them against infectious agents. In the latter, he showed the intimate communication between mast cells and nerves, delineating an underlying basis for brain-gut interactions in health, allergic responses, and inflammation. This work in integrative physiology provides novel approaches for both prevention and intervention in human disease.

Apply Now! Twenty-Four Planning Grants Available for CIHR's Roadmap Signature Initiative in Community-Based Primary Healthcare
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR) and the Office for Patient-Oriented Research are pleased to make 24 Planning Grants available as part of a major ten-year initiative to fund research that supports the delivery of high-quality community-based primary healthcare (CBPHC) across Canada. A strong foundation of research evidence in CBPHC - the first and most frequent point of contact with the healthcare system - is key in helping to achieve better health outcomes, improved equity, an overall enhanced patient experience, and other system-wide benefits.
Offered under the Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grants program, these $25,000 Planning Grants will support researchers to come together to build active and meaningful collaborations and to understand the existing CBPHC research landscape, including needs and priorities, before embarking on a full CBPHC Team Grant application in fall 2011. (Note: Teams who plan to apply for a CBPHC Team Grant are not required to apply for a CBPHC Planning Grant). To apply for the Planning Grants please visit Research Net.

Earlier in May, INMD participated in the 2nd National Obesity Summit in Montreal organized by the Canadian Obesity Network (CON). The quality of the research presented, the number and diversity of the delegates, and the breath of topics covered at this event, speak to the excellence of the Canadian obesity research community. INMD is proud to have been associated with this event, and to have had the opportunity to present the outcomes from the joint CON-INMD workshop held in December 2010 to identify research gaps and opportunities in bariatric care. INMD will be launching a funding opportunity in the near future to address some of the gaps identified at the Bariatric Care Workshop. Host a Café Scientifique
CIHR launched its Café Scientifique program as an outreach initiative that would provide answers to questions of popular interest to the general public. CIHR Cafés are typically held in bars or cafés, and involve a panel of experts who specialize in the topic at hand. Through its Café Scientifique program, CIHR organizes its own Café events but also establishes partnerships with non-profit organizations, universities, research centres, science centres and museums across Canada. If successful, these Café Scientifique partners can expect to receive $3,000 in funding to host their own Café. The deadline for applications is 8 p.m., June 30, 2011. INMD Mandate
The Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes supports research to enhance health in relation to diet, digestion, excretion, and metabolism; and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney, and liver function.
