OTTAWA (June 20, 2011) - Inflammation has often been thought of as part of the healing process. The redness, pain, swelling and heat that come with inflammation were visible signs that the body was repairing the damage caused by injury or infection. But what about the kinds of inflammation that are harder to see or feel. It's now accepted that inflammation is a major factor in chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, asthma and diabetes. This knowledge has ignited new research on inflammation that may lead to more effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat chronic disease.

The following experts from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) are available to discuss the latest research on inflammation and its role in chronic disease:

A dark side to the body's white knights: How overactive white blood cells cause damaging inflammation
Dr. Paul Kubes, CIHR-funded researcher (Calgary, AB)

Pain in the gut: Inflammation in chronic digestive diseases
Dr. John Wallace, CIHR-funded researcher (Hamilton, ON)

Internal combustion: How the immune system drives inflammation
Dr. Dana Philpott, CIHR-funded researcher (Toronto, ON)

Extinguishing breath: Inflammation in chronic lung diseases
Dr. André Cantin, CIHR-funded researcher (Sherbrooke, QC)
