a) Funding Opportunities Promoting IA Priority Areas

Operating Grant: Advancing Theoretical and Methodological Innovations

The Advancing Theoretical and Methodological Innovations Operating Grant will support research that is informed by a range of disciplinary perspectives and that advances theories, conceptual frameworks, scientific methods, and/or measurement approaches towards a strengthened Canadian health care system and improved health for Canadians. The partners have agreed to support research in one or more of the following three domains, addressing one or more of the relevant research areas outlined by each of the participating partners in the funding opportunity:

  • Domain 1: Develop or enhance theories and/or conceptual frameworks.
  • Domain 2: Develop and/or enhance quantitative, qualitative or mixed method approaches to research.
  • Domain 3: Develop and/or assess valid and reliable measurement tools.

The Institute of Aging will fund applications relevant to the domains listed above and that are relevant to Population-based longitudinal cohort studies - better understanding of the complex interplay among the wide array of determinants of health with aging will enable researchers to observe and understand the evolution of diseases, psychological attributes, function, disabilities, and psychosocial processes that frequently accompany aging.

The maximum amount per grant is $200,000 in total for up to three years. The maximum amount requested per year is $100,000. The registration deadline is September 30th, 2011.

Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant: Planning Grants - Fall 2011 Priority Announcement

The Meetings, Planning and Dissemination-planning grants - Aging opportunity will provide funding for applications that address research priority areas that are consistent with the mandate of the Institute, and that will stimulate planning activities and/or partnership development, and exchange, and that are relevant to the research priority areas described in the funding opportunity. The maximum amount awarded for a single MPD - Aging grant is $25,000 for eligible non-recurring meetings and events, for up to one year. The application deadline is October 17th, 2011.

CIHR-IA Recognition Prize in Research on Aging

The IA Recognition Prizes in Research on Aging encourage and honour our brightest rising stars. They consist of a supplement to the research allowance, given in year one of the recipient's award. The awardees of the Prizes are the top IA-relevant candidates for each of the 3 trainee awards and are valued at the following amounts: $2,500 (Doctoral), $5,000 (Fellowship) and $10,000 (New Investigator).

Physiotherapy in Mobility in Aging Doctoral Research Award

This Doctoral Research Award will support physiotherapy-related research that addresses knowledge and knowledge to action gaps within the range of intrinsic and extrinsic challenges (from biological to environmental) associated with mobility of older Canadians. The application deadline is October 14th, 2011.

b) Funding Opportunities Promoting Exchange and Research to Action

Partnerships for Health Systems Improvement

The Partnerships for Health System Improvement (PHSI) program aims to strengthen Canada's healthcare system through collaborative, applied and policy-relevant research. PHSI is Canada's premier health services and policy research competition — and with its strong emphasis on partnerships and knowledge translation it is also a major resource for managers and policy makers who want relevant research to inform their decision-making. PHSI funds teams of decision makers and researchers to conduct applied health services and policy research. PHSI projects can last up to three years and receive up to a maximum of $400,000 from CIHR over the life of the project. Additional funding from external partners is required. The application deadline is November 1st, 2011.

c) Other funding opportunities of interest

Industrial Research in Neuroinflammation Fellowship

This Fellowship will support Neuroinflammation research that contributes to the understanding of how inflammatory processes impact neurodegenerative diseases. The disease focus is at the discretion of the candidate. The candidate must provide an interesting hypothesis that can be pursued in a diverse research environment that seeks to identify common biological principles and mechanisms underlying multiple diseases. The application deadline is October 3rd, 2011.

CIHR Roadmap Signature Initiative in Evidence-Informed Healthcare Renewal

The CIHR's new Evidence-Informed Healthcare Renewal (EIHR) initiative will support researchers and decision makers to advance the current state of knowledge, generate novel and creative solutions, and translate evidence for uptake into policy and practice to strengthen Canada's healthcare systems.

The EIHR initiative focuses on three priority areas: financing and funding models; health system sustainability; and governance and accountability. Innovation in these areas will require contributions from a wide range of disciplines and methodological approaches. Health services and health policy research would greatly benefit from contributions from economics, political science, sociology, philosophy, law, and other relevant fields, and from the involvement of researchers, policy makers, decision makers and healthcare providers.

The EIHR initiative has priority announcements on the following funding opportunities:
