New Brunswick (August 19, 2011) – In support of the Government of Canada's commitment to strengthening Canada's healthcare system, the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway announced today on behalf of the Honorable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, funding for policy-relevant research in New Brunswick.
"Our government is committed to continuously improving health care and health systems in Canada," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This project will enable meaningful collaboration between researchers and decision makers who will be able to use the results of the research to address important health system challenges. Their important work will help ensure Canadians have access to the best possible health services."
The project is funded through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)'s Partnerships for Health System Improvement (PHSI) program, which supports teams of researchers and decision makers interested in conducting applied and policy-relevant health systems and services research that responds to the needs of health care decision makers and strengthens the Canadian health system. This project is one of 25 projects that Minister Aglukkaq announced yesterday in Calgary. The projects were selected through a rigorous, independent, peer-review process.
"A funding program based on partnership like PHSI offers Canada's health-system decision makers evidence-based answers to pressing health system questions," said Minister Ashfield. "This knowledge translation will in turn benefit Canadians by improving the quality and delivery of healthcare and Canadian health systems."
Dr. Stacey Reading will lead the research team at the University of New Brunswick that will aim to create a physician referral destination program for obese patients seeking to improve their health through lifestyle change. They will examine the process, viability and efficacy of a proposed intervention that utilizes an interdisciplinary team of family physicians, registered dietitians (RD), certified exercise physiologist (CEP) and psychologists to deliver a community-based lifestyle modification program that is reliant on minimal infrastructure.
