From your family doctor to your pharmacist and hospital, you probably have more than one health care provider. And each one of these providers keeps a file describing a fragment of your medical history. This valuable information not only helps guide treatment decisions that directly affect your personal health, it may also contain data that is useful to health researchers.
As health care providers across Canada upgrade their systems allowing for the sharing of electronic information, important questions are emerging. Who will be able to access this medical information – doctors, researchers, guardians, patients? How will patients benefit from these new technologies and become more engaged in their own care? And what will it mean for the future of health care?
