  • Promoting Health Equity: Action on the Social Determinants of Health

  • Over 130 researchers, decision-makers, funders, and others in the field of population health attended a Population Health Intervention Research (PHIR) Symposium in November 2010.

    The purpose of the Symposium was to:
    • Identify issues relevant to advancing the science of PHIR
    • Identify emergent PHIR priorities and related data infrastructure requirements
    • Showcase PHIR examples from Canada and other countries

    The event was sponsored by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) - Institute of Population and Public Health, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes.

  • Approximately 60 researchers met in December 2010 for a Population Health Intervention Research workshop.

    The objectives of the workshop were to:

    • create a forum to contrast, debate, and discuss the different theoretical and methodological underpinnings of PHIR in order to advance the science of population health interventions
    • identify priority areas for theoretical and methodological development in PHIR

  • Registration is open for the Canadian Public Health Association Conference, June 19-22, 2011. Montreal, QC
  • Pre-announcement of the first joint research activity - hypertension
    The Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD), a consortium of national health research funding agencies that includes CIHR, announced on December 8, 2010, its intention to release a Request for Applications (RFA) on Implementation Research on Hypertension in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). Investigators are invited to submit proposals to improve effective approaches to the prevention and control of hypertension. CIHR will be accepting applications for research in both LMICs and with First Nations, Metis and Inuit populations and communities.

    The final announcement is expected in April 2011
