Highlights from the November 10, 2011 CIHR Scientific Expert Working Group Meeting

A meeting of the Scientific Expert Working Group was held by teleconference on November 10, 2011 (meeting agenda).

The Scientific Expert Working Group was updated on the literature presented at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS, 19-22 October 2011, Amsterdam, The Netherlands), and on the research literature that was recently published on Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI).

An update was provided by study investigators regarding the progress of the seven North American studies funded by the MS Society of Canada and the National MS Society (US).

Finally, the Scientific Expert Working Group received an update on the request for research proposals for a Phase I/II Clinical Trial on the safety and efficacy of the CCSVI procedure.

Meeting Outcomes:

  • All seven funded studies have made good progress and many of them are nearing completion for recruitment of patients.
  • It was decided that CIHR, in collaboration with the MS Society of Canada, would launch a Request for Application in November 2011 with very specific requirements regarding the CCSVI Ultrasound Protocol to be incorporated into the trial design for all applications.
  • The next meeting of the CIHR Scientific Expert Working Group will be held in May 2012.
