Funding Opportunities Aligned with CIHR Roadmap Signature Initiatives
Team Grant: China-Canada Initiative on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders
The Team Grant: China-Canada initiative on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders funding opportunity is jointly managed and funded by the CIHR and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Within CIHR, the joint program is part of the International Collaborative Research Strategy for Alzheimer's Disease (ICRSAD). The scientific agenda for ICRSAD focuses on the early events in ARD including risk factor identification, early diagnosis, early intervention, and prevention. Funding will be provided for applications that are determined to be relevant to the following research areas: 1) Models; 2) Biomarkers and Brain Imaging; 3) Genetics/Epigenetics; 4) Drug Development; 5) Vascular Dementia, and 6) Clinical Studies. For Canadian researchers, the maximum amount per project is CAD $250,000 per year for up to four years. For Chinese researchers, the amount available per project is 3 million RMB for up to four years. The application deadline is June 21st, 2012.
Team Grant: Canadian Epigenetics, Environment, and Health Research Consortium
This funding opportunity encourages the translation of research in epigenetics to health benefit, recognizing that this will ultimately require the participation of researchers across the full spectrum of health research, including biomedical, clinical, health systems and health policy, and population and public health. In the specific context of this funding opportunity, the Institute of Aging seeks to support one team that advances the scientific work of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) with a particular focus on epigenetics and senescence, longevity and healthy aging.
In addition, and in line with its strategic priorities, the International Collaborative Research Strategy for Alzheimer's Disease and the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction are committed to fund one application that enhances the understanding of epigenetic modification on Alzheimer's disease and related dementia initiation and progression which may help in:
- reducing individual risk for development of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias;
- delaying the onset, and arresting or retarding the progression of disease through early intervention and diagnosis.
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $9,000,000. The maximum amount for a team is $300,000 per year for up to five years. The Letter of Intent deadline is May 31st, 2012.
Evidence-Informed Healthcare Renewal (EIHR) funding opportunity – Healthcare Renewal Policy Analysis grants
CIHR will be launching a new funding opportunity called Healthcare Renewal Policy Analysis in April 2012, as part of CIHR's Roadmap Signature Initiative in Evidence-Informed Healthcare Renewal (EIHR). This initiative is launched in partnership with the CIHR – Institute of Aging.
Healthcare Renewal Policy Analysis grants depend on meaningful partnerships between researchers and senior-level policy makers who work directly within the health sector in federal, provincial or territorial government departments, regional health authorities, or LHINs as well as those who work in other sectors (e.g., education, social services, industry) that develop policy with population-level health impacts.

Funding Opportunities Promoting Institute of Aging Priority Areas
China-Canada Joint Health Research Initiative
The China-Canada Joint Health Research Initiative is jointly managed and funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Its aim is to promote the development of Canadian-Chinese scientific co-operation between universities, hospitals, research institutes or affiliated research organizations in Canada and China through the support of collaborative research grants. IA-relevant funded research will include applications in the area of Aging, Gerontology and Geriatrics. For Canadian researchers, the maximum amount awarded for a single grant is up to CAD $75,000 per year for up to three years. For Chinese researchers, the maximum amount awarded for a single grant is the equivalent of up to 333,333 RMB per year for up to three years. The application deadline is May 15th, 2012.
Catalyst Grant: Health Services and Systems for an Aging Population
This funding opportunity provides seed funding, on a short term basis, to:
- support innovative ideas and projects aligned with the goals, objectives and principles of the Institute of Aging (IA)'s Health Services and Systems for an Aging Population (HSSAP) initiative;
- support original, high quality projects which have the potential to generate high impact results and/or innovative research proposals, research tools, techniques, or methodologies;
- encourage researchers from other fields to consider research questions related to Health Services and Systems for an Aging Population.
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $600,000. The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $ 100,000 per annum for up to 1 year. The registration deadline is June 15th, 2012.
Planning Grants – Spring 2012 Priority Announcements
The Planning Grants - Aging opportunity will provide funding for applications that address research priority areas that are consistent with the mandate of the Institute, that will stimulate planning activities and/or partnership development, and exchange, and that are relevant to the research priority areas described in the funding opportunity. The Planning Grants – Health Services and Systems for an Aging Population opportunity will provide funding for applications that will stimulate research planning activities and/or research partnership development and that are relevant to Health Services and Systems for an Aging Population. The maximum amount awarded for a single Planning Grant is $25,000 for eligible non-recurring meetings and events, for up to one year. The application deadline is June 15th, 2012.
Operating Grant: Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) Program
The Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) program is a joint initiative between the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). This program supports innovative interdisciplinary collaborative research projects requiring participation from the natural sciences or engineering community together with the health sciences community. Proposed research projects must have a strong focus on knowledge translation (KT), and lead to health and economic benefits for Canadians, more effective health services and products, and/or a strengthened health care system. Funding for CHRP projects can be for up to three years. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $22.1 million over three years. The Letter of Intent deadline is May 15th, 2012.
Age+ Prize
The IA Age+ Prize recognizes excellence in research on aging carried out by emerging Canadian scholars and the resulting publications. Awards are for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents from all disciplines, conducting research in aging. The award is valued at $1,000. The next application deadline is May 1st, 2012.
Other Opportunities of Interest
International Summer School on Ageing
The International Summer School on Ageing (ISSA) aims at building capacity by offering graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in ageing research the opportunity to enhance their chances of starting a career in their field, and to network with emerging researchers and academic mentors from different countries. Its design reflects multifaceted perspectives of the ageing process and has a strong interdisciplinary and international focus. The first summer school will have a specific focus on longitudinal studies, and will be held in Ancona, Italy from September 10th-14th, 2012. The application deadline is April 15th, 2012.
