Role and Responsibilities of the IAB Chair
1. Purpose
The purpose of the Institute Advisory Board (IAB) Chair is to provide sound advice to the Scientific Director and to provide overall direction of the IAB meetings.
2. Selection Process and Term
The IAB Chair for each Institute is appointed by Governing Council, on the advice of its Nominating and Governance Committee, in consultation with the Scientific Director. The IAB Chair is a valued partner and is part of the Institute leadership team.
The IAB Chair shall be invited to serve initial term of up to three years and may be reappointed for a second term of up to three years for a maximum of six consecutive years of service. The IAB Chair is also a member of the IAB Board.
3. Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to the roles and responsibilities of IAB members, the IAB Chair has specific duties and responsibilities:
- The Chair acts as a sounding board to the Scientific Director and helps to determine the meeting objectives and plans.
- The Chair is responsible for calling the meetings and setting the agenda following consultation with the Scientific Director.
- The Chair manages the Board and ensures that all members have an opportunity to participate.
- The Chair also ensures that a regular evaluation of the performance of the Board, including absences is undertaken.
- The Chair plays an active role in the IAB renewal process with the Scientific Director and will identify gaps, determine the requirements of the Board, review the list of candidates, engage and participate in the selection of new IAB members and renewal of current IAB members.
4. Succession Planning
The IAB Chair provides continuity during the transition of the Scientific Director or home Institution. For succession purposes, the IAB Chair may be extended for one or two years to ensure continuity on the Board.
