CIHR Douglas Kinsella Doctoral Award for Research in Bioethics

Maxwell J. SmithMax's research interests are predominantly in the area of public health ethics. In particular, his doctoral research explores the moral foundations of public health/global health emergency preparedness and response.  In the past, Max has worked as a research coordinator with the Canadian Program of Research on Ethics in a Pandemic (CanPREP).

Max has received an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Bioethics and Cognitive Science from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science degree in Bioethics from Union Graduate College and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Max has also completed a Certificate in Health Law from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, a CIHR Fellowship in Public Health Policy, and a Junior Doctoral Fellowship in the Comparative Program on Health and Society at the Munk School of Global Affairs.  Currently, Max is a doctoral student in Social and Behavioural Health Science at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. He is also a student of the Collaborative Program in Bioethics at the Joint Centre for Bioethics, as well as the Collaborative Program in Health Services and Policy Research in the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation, both at the University of Toronto.

The CIHR Douglas Kinsella Doctoral Award for Research in Bioethics honours the accomplishments of Dr. T. Douglas Kinsella in bioethics and his lifelong promotion of the ethical treatment of humans in research. Dr. Kinsella, CM, MD, FRCPC (February 15, 1932 - June 15, 2004) dedicated much of his life to the field of bioethics, including research on ethical, legal and medical issues involved in assisted suicide, non-voluntary euthanasia and genetics research.
