Funding Opportunities Aligned with CIHR Roadmap Signature Initiatives

Catalyst Grant - Secondary Analysis of Neuroimaging Databases

The goal of this funding opportunity is to promote the use of Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative data, with possible linkages to other world-class neuroimaging databases, in order to maximize the benefits from imaging data to contribute to the early detection of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias, and to contribute to our understanding of the pathological, etiological and functional linkages between Alzheimer's Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases having an impact on cognition. The maximum amount per grant is $50,000 per year for up to 2 years. The registration deadline is August 31, 2012.

Team Grant : Health Challenges in Chronic Inflammation Initiative

The overall objective of the Health Challenges in Chronic Inflammation initiative team grant is to support health research through the discovery and validation of common biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and universal inflammatory mechanisms across chronic diseases, with the ultimate goal to prevent, monitor and /or treat chronic disease by reducing inflammation. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $22,950,000. Of this amount, $1,250,000 is available from the Institute of Aging to fund applications that address research priority areas that are consistent with IA's mandate, and $1,250,000 is available from the Institute of Aging to jointly fund a grant relevant to inflammation and neurodegeneration. The letter of intent deadline is November 15, 2012.

Evidence-Informed Healthcare Renewal (EIHR) funding opportunity – Healthcare Renewal Policy Analysis grants

These grants will support the generation of high-quality policy analyses that identify evidence-informed policy options for healthcare renewal in Canada in the EIHR priority areas of healthcare financing and funding, health system sustainability, and governance and accountability. Innovation in these areas will require contributions from a wide range of disciplines and would greatly benefit from contributions from economics, political science, sociology, philosophy, law, and other relevant fields. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $2,250,000. Of this amount, $150,000 is available from the Institute of Aging to fund grants relevant to IA areas as described in the call. The application deadline is September 19, 2012.

Funding Opportunities Promoting Institute of Aging Priority Areas

Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) Emerging Network Grants

This funding opportunity was developed to support the creation of formal national networks in areas that are relevant to the mandate of the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH). These Emerging Networks will bring together a unified group of investigators and stakeholders ranging from basic discovery to population and health systems research to build a critical mass of technical and scientific expertise with strong leadership to enhance research innovation and impact. ICRH Emerging Networks will develop a co-ordinated national approach to the evaluation and resolution of specific research challenges. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $17,520,000 over 5 years, enough to fund 4 Networks. Of this amount, IA will provide $1,000,000 ($250,000 per priority research area) to fund applications that address research priority areas that are consistent with IA's mandate. The letter of intent deadline is November 1, 2012.

Catalyst Grant : Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

The specific objective of this funding opportunity is to encourage Canadian investigators to develop novel screening tools and techniques, or novel applications of existing tools or techniques for the early detection, diagnosis, evaluation, patient management and stratification following mild traumatic brain injury. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $1,600,000, enough to fund up to 16 grants. The maximum amount per grant is $100,000 per year for one year. IA will primarily consider funding one application determined to be aligned with the Institute's Mobility in Aging initiative, with an emphasis on mild traumatic brain injury caused by seniors' falls. Should there be no relevant applications in this area, the IA would consider funding applications that are determined to be relevant its research priority areas. The application deadline is October 3, 2012.

Chantal Caron Doctoral Research Award in Geriatric Nursing

The Chantal Caron Doctoral Research Award in Geriatric Nursing aims to stimulate research careers and to increase research capacity in this area. An increase in geriatric nursing researchers in Québec is necessary to attract excellent candidates and to enrich university-based research in the area of geriatric nursing and practice. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $ 150,000, enough to fund one award. The application deadline is October 15, 2012.

Travel Awards in Aging

Through this trainee travel award the IA seeks to encourage networking and exchange of ideas among emerging scholars working within its priority research areas. The award value is up to $1,000. The next application deadline is September 21, 2012.

This funding opportunity will catalyze e-health innovations by integrating, augmenting and evaluating novel health information technologies to empower patients as partners in their care, create a new generation of decision tools for health professionals to enable individualized care, and monitor population health. The maximum amount per grant is $100,000 for up to one year. The application deadline is October 16, 2012.

2012 CIHR/CMAJ Top Achievements in Health Research Awards: Call for applications

CIHR is currently accepting applications to the CIHR/Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) Top Achievements in Health Research Awards competition. Through this award, CIHR and the CMAJ recognize important contributions and say thank you for the work done.

Previous winners of this national award have reported that it provided local, national and international visibility to Canadian health research accomplishments. The deadline for submissions is September 28, 2012.
