Scientific Director, Institute of Cancer Research, Canadian Institutes of Health Research

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) invests in research to address the broad range of challenges presented by this disease. This includes research into promising new modalities for prevention and treatment of cancer, as well as efforts to improve the health and quality of life of cancer patients.

As the leader of CIHR-ICR, and upon the advice of the Institute Advisory Board, the Scientific Director will foster:

  • leadership in cancer research and its translation into new treatments, diagnostics and other interventions involving policy and health service delivery; and
  • partnership, collaboration and capacity building to ensure the continued relevance and impact of Canada's cancer research community and community development.

As a member of Scientific Council, the Scientific Director, in collaboration with colleagues from the other CIHR Institutes, will be involved in setting and implementing CIHR's strategic agenda and deciding upon the resultant research spending.

The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent in a discipline directly relevant to the CIHR-ICR's mandate. He or she will hold a position at a recognized university and will be known internationally as an outstanding researcher. The candidate will demonstrate research team leadership as well as extensive experience in the development and management of large-scale research collaborations/partnerships. This role demands significant knowledge of the cancer research community, specifically, a strong understanding of the relative strengths, gaps and opportunities in both the Canadian and international cancer research communities. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens. Proficiency in both official languages is an asset.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the Government of Canada's health research investment agency. CIHR's mission is to create new scientific knowledge and to enable its translation into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health care system. Composed of 13 Institutes, CIHR provides leadership and support to more than 14,100 health researchers and trainees across Canada.
