Personalized Medicine
The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research, Institute of Genetics, and Institute of Health Services and Policy Research, in partnership with several CIHR institutes, and in close consultation with provincial and federal funders, are leading the new strategic initiative in Personalized Medicine. This initiative aims to capitalize on Canadian health researchers' strengths in identifying disease-related genes and biomarkers and in translational research in order to integrate evidenced-based medicine and precision diagnostics into clinical practice. After two workshops held in 2011 in Montreal and Luxembourg, a third closed workshop on Personalized Medicine in Canada: A Multi-Stakeholder Workshop to Examine the Canadian Perspective is scheduled for 12-13 January 2012 in Ottawa in collaboration with Health Canada. This important workshop is a first of its kind in Canada and is intended to initiate a dialogue on personalized medicine issues to begin building a broad range of stakeholders. Its aim is to gain an understanding of the nature and extent of the issue, to identify potential stakeholder interests, and to explore possible synergies and cooperation for a Canadian approach to the issue.
