Advancing Population and Public Health Economics

Notice

January 15-16, 2013
Toronto, Ontario

A workshop of the National Collaborating Centres for Public Health (NCCPH) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Population and Public Health (CIHR-IPPH), in collaboration with the Canadian Institute for Health Information-Canadian Population Health Initiative (CIHI-CPHI) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

Purpose

Engage researchers and professionals with expertise in the area of population and public health economics and to stimulate dialogue about key areas for research and capacity-building in the field, including how to enhance the conduct, funding, dissemination and use of economic evidence within the Canadian context in the development and evaluation of policies and programs affecting population and public health.

Overview

Economic analyses in population and public health is an important area since it allows us to measure the return on our public health investments, the burden of a disease or evaluate the effectiveness and cost of public health interventions. For example, assessing the impact of mental illness in the workplace on the economy due to productivity loss can help guide decision-making. For better health outcomes and a strong economy, public health researchers and economists need to further work together.
