Message from the President: IPPH and INMD Scientific Directors term renewals

2013-07-12

It is with great pleasure that I, along with the CIHR Governing Council, announce the renewal of the terms of Dr. Nancy Edwards, as Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH), and Dr. Philip Sherman, as Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD). Under the leadership of Dr. Edwards and Dr. Sherman, these institutes continue to play instrumental roles in their respective mandate areas in advancing health research in Canada and internationally.

During her first term, Dr. Edwards has been a strong champion for global health research and has supported the growing field of population health intervention research. She has also contributed significantly to the development of several CIHR Signature Initiatives, particularly serving as the co-lead of the Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples and Community-Based Primary Health Care Signature Initiatives.

For his part, Dr. Sherman actively championed a food and health research initiative and continued to support obesity and healthy body weight research. Furthermore, he has led a national Workshop and related funding initiative on the influence of genes and the environment on the development of chronic, non-communicable disease, and supported enhanced cooperative research efforts and played a key partnership role in the rare diseases and the human microbiome research initiatives.

Dr. Edwards's second term will end in July 2016 and Dr. Sherman's second term will conclude in December 2016. Please join me in congratulating Drs. Edwards and Sherman.

Sincerely,

Alain Beaudet, MD, PhD
President
Canadian Institutes of Health Research
