On February 4, 2016, at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Science, Terry Beech, announced $11.7 million in funding to help establish a team of top researchers from across Canada to lead an attack on brain tumours.

With funding from CIHR, Genome Canada, the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research and Stand Up to Cancer Canada, the team will focus on brain tumour stem cells and their ability to fuel the growth, spread and recurrence of deadly brain tumours in children and adults.

The team hopes its research will allow it to better understand brain tumour stem cells and ultimately, to develop new drugs to improve survival rates for patients diagnosed with brain cancer.

The announcement took place on World Cancer Day.
